Application filed may 8, 1920. serial Ito. 3793M).
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nona E. McMAnoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of @olumbia, county of Maui: and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicating-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in indicating plates, such as are customarily affixed to velncles, especially automobiles and carriages for the purpose of aiiixing'numbers or initialsof the owner of the vehicle thereto, and has for its object the provision of a device of this class, which will be simple in construction, economic of manufacture and highly eihcient in use.
Another object is the provision in a device of this class of means for securely fastoning the indicating characters on the vehicle in such a manner that the same may be'readily and easily removed.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a plan view showing the front of the invention, v i I Fig. 2, is a plan view showing the rear of the frame used in the invention,
3, is a plan view showing the front of the frame used in the invention, one of the sides being loosened at one end,
Fig. i, is a sectional view taken on substantially line. H of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5, is a sectional view taken stantially line 55 of Fig. 2,
6, is an elevational view of the indicatin characters used in the invention,
Fig Z, is a side elevational view of one of the indicating characters used in the invention.
The preferred form of construction comprises a frame 11 one side 12 of which is pivotally mounted as at 13 which is engaged in the bifurcated portion of frame ll'which is formed at 13. The frame 11 is also bifurcated at 14 for receiving the tongue 15 provided at the opposite end of the side 12. The side of the frame which is opposite the side 12 is provided with pockets or on subrecesses 16 which aline with pockets or recesses 17 formed in the side 12, the pockets in the mentioned sides being in alinement when the tongue 15 is secured to the frame at 14. lit is thus seen that the side 12 is pivotally mounted and when the tongue 15 is engaged in the bifurcated portion 14:, the same may be securely fastened in this position by means of a rivet or bolt projected through an opening provided in the portion 14 which registers with the opening provided in the tongue 15 as shown in Fig. 3.
The invention, as already stated, is designed for use with a vehicle and affords means for placing indicating characters or indices 18 therein. The frame 11 is secured to the vehicle by screws-11 and the indicating characters or indices are each provided at opposite ends with tongues 19 which are adapted to snugly engage in the pockets or recesses 16 and 17. After the frame 11 has been attached to the vehile, the tongues on the upper side of the indicating characters are inserted in the pockets 16 and the side 12 is then moved into position so that the tongue 15 engages in the bifurcated portion 14. When this position is obtained the tongues at the lower end of the indicating characters are engaged in the pockets or recesses 17 so that the indices are securely held in position. The tongue 15 is then securely fastened within the bifurcated portion 14:. it is thus seen that a simple and durable structure is presented for attaching indicating characters to a vehicle and it is also believed to be apparent that the indicating characters may be removed from the frame without the removal of the frame from the vehicle, thus allowing the indicat ing characters to be changed without in any sometimes result from removing the plate 11 therefrom and again attaching it thereto.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited tothe precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a
end for ready separation from the opposite side of said frame, said opposite sides of said frame being provided with transversely registering pockets; and indicating members having projections at opposite ends arranged to seat in said pockets, whereby said indicating members are separately and independently supported in said frame, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a monogram support comprising a compressed plate having a rectangular opening at one side thereof; spaced recesses in the plate along the inner edge of said opening; a socket in the corner of said plate at the outer side of'said opening; a pressed bar h: ving one end pivotally mounted in said socket; a socket in the opposite corner of said plate for engagement of the opposite end of said bar; recesses along the inner edge of said bar opposite the recesses along the edge of the opening; and indicating members having projections ontheir opposite ends engaging said recesses; said indicating members being retained in position by said bar, substa-ntially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in. the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
