PATENT OFFICE.
NORA E. Mc AHoN, or oonnnrnm. rnnnnssnn.
nvnroarnve rna'rn Application filed May 7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nona E. MoMAHoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Columbia. county of Maury, and State of Tennessee, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Indicating Plates. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in indicating plates of the type set forth in my pending application, Serial No. 379,780, filed May 8, 1920. Such plates are customarily fixed to vehicles, especially automobiles and carriages for the purpose of fixing numbers or initials of the owner of the vehicle thereto, and has for its object the provision of an improved device which will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture and eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a front view of the indicating plate;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the facing plate; and,
Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line 4.4; of Fig. 1.
The device consists of a preferably substantially diamond shaped facing plate 1 provided with an opening 2. The plate 1 is pressed outwardly at the top and bottom of the opening to form an upper flange 3 and lower flange 4. The plate 1 also has a flange 5 extending entirely around the inner face of said plate. Letters, numerals, or other insignia 6 are mounted before the opening 2, said letters being provided with shoulders 7 and 8 which are adapted to be placed on the inner supporting shelves 1'0 and 11 formed by the flanges 3 and 4:- A backing plate 12 is adapted tofit within the flange 5 on the facing plate and rest against sa1d plate and the shoulders on the letters or other insignia to hold the same in the depressions formed in the plate 1 by the outwardly pressed flanges 3 and 4. The back ing plate 12 preferably has an opening 15 corresponding to the opening 2 in the facing plate 1, so that the letters or other indicia Specification of Letters -Batent.

held between said plates will be clearly defined against variously colored backgrounds of the objects to which the plate is applied. Screws 13 are adapted to be tapped through said facing plate 1 and engage threaded sockets in the backing plate 12 to fasten same tightly together. The facing plate 1 and the backing plate 12 are provided with openings 14 for insertion of screws or nails to fasten the plate to the vehicle.
It will readily be seen that any type of letter, numeral of any material may be quickly removed or inserted from said plate and that the plate when in position on the vehicle will hold the letters securely. The plate is extremely neat and of durable construction and when attached to a vehicle provides an attractive monogram therefor.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described comprising a facing plate; an opening in said facing plate; outwardly pressed flanges adjacent said opening; insignia mounted in said flanges; a backing plate engaging said facing plate and said insignia to hold same in position; an opening in said backing plate corresponding to the opening in said facing plate so that said insignia is defined against the background of the object to which the device is applied; and means for securing said backing plate to said facing plate, sub stantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a facing plate having an opening therein; an outwardly pressed flange at the top of said opening; an outwardly pressed flange at the-bottom of said opening; a
flange surrounding the inner edge of said facing plate; individual letters mounted in said outwardly pressed flanges; a backing plate inserted within said inner flange on said facing plate; an opening in said back ing plate corresponding to the opening in said facing plate so that said insignia is deoutwardly pressed flange at the bottom of said opening; shoulders on said letters adapted to engage said flanges; a backing plate adapted to be inserted within said flanges on said facing plate and against said 15 letters; an opening in said backing plate corresponding to the opening in sald facing plate so that said insignia is defined against the background of the object to which the device is applied; and screws for holding 20 the plates together, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
