Be it known that we, EDWARD SOHRUTI-I, ALBERT Sci-morn, and JOHN F. SoHRUrH, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Pepin, in the county of Pepin and State of lVisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches and particularly to a latch for use on gates, doors and the like, the said invention having for its object the provision of novel means whereby a latch is rotatably held in engagement with the catch or lug, novel means being provided whereby the latch may be operated from either side of the door or closure.
A stillfurther object of this invention is to provide a latch of the character indicated having what may be termed a trigger lift and operable by gravity so that the device is free of springs or other elements which are apt to become impaired by exposure to weather conditions; the said invention further contemplating the provision of a latch having a guard to prevent its operation by animals, while at the same time. the said device is capable of being easily manipulated byhand even though the hand is encumbered by heavy covering such as mittens or the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a latch embodying the invention;

In these drawings 10 denotes a plate in which the latch bolt 11 is rotatably mounted, the said plate being shaped to form a barrel or hearing 12 to receive a portion of the bolt, and the said bolt is furthermore offset as shown at 13 so that the bolt has a crank action, the end 1 1- traveling in an arc of a circle concentric with the axis of the other portion of the bolt. The bolt is partially rotated through the medium of trigger handles 15 and 16, the former of which has an aperture to receive the end 17 of the bolt, the said end being made angular in cross section so that as the latch lever oscillates, motion will be communicated to the bolt. The operating member 16 has an angular]; disposed end 18 which embraces and engages the extension 19 of the handle 15 so that the door or gate may be opened from either side by manipulating one or the other of the said handles.
The plate 10 has an extension 20 which is of such contour as to permit the end of the latch to travel back of it or with relation to its surface, but the said extension constitutes a guard which prevents animals train actuating or rotating the bolt since the extension of the plate acts as a guard to prevent access to the bolt. The bolt engaging member in the present embodiment of the invention consists of a plate 21 having a lug 22 with its outer surface rounded or curved to form a camming surface which will serve to cause the bolt to partially rotate when the gate or door swings to carry the bolt past the lug, and the said lug on its inner surface has a seat 23 in which the latch engages to hold the door or gate in closed position.
As a further means of preventing operation of the bolt by livestock, the trigger handles 15 and 16 are protected by the handles or guards 24 and 25 each having its ends connected to the door or gate above and below a trigger handle. The trigger handle 16 is oscillatably mounted with relation to the door by means of a pin 26 which passes through an aperture 'of the said trigger handle, and the said pin 26 is held in position by a plate 27 having a slot to receive the trigger handle, the said plate being bent outwardly on each side of the slot to form seats such as 28 for the pin 26 so that when the pin is placed through the aperture of the trigger handle and in the seat back of the plate, it would be held therein without requiring riveting. The plate is shown more particularly in detail in Fig. 5, and its relation to the other parts of the device will, it is thought, be apparent.
From an inspection of the drawing, it would be apparent that the bolt may be used also to hold the door or gate open if a bolt engaging member such as has been described were placed in position so that when the door swings open, it will operate the bolt to cause their engagement, and this is a provision which under certain conditions will be found very advantageous.
A device made in accordance with the invention described and shown has been found strong and durable as Well as efficient and satisfactory in use, and as the parts are comparatively inexpensive, the whole device can be produced at low cost.
lVe claim:
1. In a locking bolt for doors, a plate having a bolt bearing and an extension forming a. shield, a bolt rotatable in the bearing and having a crankextension overlying the shield, a bolt engaging member, and means for partially rotating the said bolt. I
2. In a locking bolt for doors, a plate having a bolt bearing and an extension forming a shield, a bolt rotatable in the bearing and having a crank extension overlying the shield, a bolt engaging member comprising, a plate having a lug with a curved outer surface and a seat in its inner surface, and means for partially rotating the bolt.
3. In a bolt latch, a plate, a bolt rota-, tably mounted on the plate, said bolt having an offset portion adapted to travel in an arc of a circle concentric to the axisof the bolt, a trigger handle mountedon one end of the bolt and adapted to partially 1-0- tate it, and a trigger handle pivotally mounted in operative relation to the first mentioned trigger handle and adapted to actuate said first mentioned handle.
4. In a bolt latch, a plate, a bolt rotatably mounted on the plate, said bolt having an offset portion adaptedto travel in an arc of a circle concentric to the axis of the bolt, a trigger handle mounted on one end of the bolt and adapted to partially rotate it, a trigger handle pivotally' mounted in operative relation tow the first mentioned trigger handle and adaptedto communicate motion thereto, and guards for saidtrigger handles.
5. In a bolt latch, a plate, a bolt rotatably I mounted with relation to the 7 plate, said bolt having an offset portion adapted to travel in an arc of a circle concentric to the axis of the bolt, a curved extension on the plate overlying the offset portion of the bolt, a member for engagingthe bolt-and means for rotating the bolt.
