UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
GUSTAV RANGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE CABINETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,435, dated April 29, 1873; application filed Aprn 12,1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GUsTAV RANGE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement iu Cabinets for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Sewing-machines have heretofore been inclosed in a cabinet or case, and part of the space at the ends of the cabinet has been availed of for drawers to hold tools, work, &c. My invention consists in combining with the cabinet a secretary and a lookingglass; and these occupy the space at the ends of the cabinet, and are itted so that they can he elevated above the top ofthe cabinet and brought into position for use at pleasure.
Inv the drawing, Figure l is a plan. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections of my improved cabinet at the lines :v t and y y, respectively; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of same.
The cabinet or case is made with the front a, back b, top c, and ends, as usual, and in the front at the center thereof the required opening a `is provided to allow of the treadles of the sewing-machine being worked by the feet. A row of drawers may be provided in the front a, at one side of the central opening, as at b',- and I prefer that these drawers should be at the end of the cabinet, so as to leave the required space for the looking-glass e between said central opening and the drawers. The lookingglass e is in a frame, h, that is pivoted at t' to the base or supporti, and said glass and frame, whenl within the cabinet, stand transversely of the same. The frame h and base l are fitted to move vertically up and down in suitable guides or slides c', and in the top c there is an opening to allow the frame h to pass. When said frame is raised up above the top c it can be turned upon the pivot t' to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, and full lines, Fig. 4, so that a person sitting or standing at the machine or facing the cabinet can look into the glass. Weights or counterpoise are shown at m to raise or aid in raising the glass and frame, and when pressed down to place in the cabinet the glass is secured by a lock or latch, d', and the surface oi' the table c is level and smooth, or nearly so. The secretary n or desk occupies the space at the side of the central opening a', opposite to that of the glass e, and it is pivoted at t" to a base, l', and fitted to move up and down and turn to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, and .full lines, Fig. 4, when above the top c, the same as the glass. This .secretary is vmade with drawers, shelves, pigeon-holes, 85e.,l and a hinged iiap, e1, should be used to cover or inclose the front, andA also form a 'Writing-desk when the secretary is raised, and
said flap turned down and rest upon thc top c. The flap may be made with a hin ged leaf, e2, to fold over and extend the width of the desk. The secretary, when pressed down to place, is secured by the latch a. The top of the secretary u and frame h, when within the cabinet, are flush with the surface ot' the top c, and lill the respective openings therein 5 hence, they oler no obstruction to work being moved over said top c.
If desired, the looking-glass might slide vertically behind the drawers on one side, and its frame would not require to be turned upon a pivot.
I claim as myinventionl. A sewing-machine cabinet-case and lookingglass combined with a frame carrying such glass, and sliding vertically in the said case, substantially as' set forth.
-2. A sewing-machine cabinet-case and desk or secretary combined with slides in :such case in which the secretary or desk is moved vertically, substantially as set forth. 3. A sewing-machine cabinetcase combined with a base sliding vertically, a counterpoise, and a looking-glass orb desk turning upon a pivot, substantially as set forth.
Signed by 'me this 9th day of April, 1873.
