Description
E. F. FRENCH. Bindings fur Sewing-Machine Covers. No. }38,324,- I PatentdApril29.1f873.
UNITED STATES EVELYN F. FRENCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BINDINGS FOR SEWING-MACHINE COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 138,324, dated April 29, 1873; application filed January 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVELYN F. FRENCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Binding for Sewing-Machine Covers, Boxes, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a sewing-machine cover provided with my improved binding. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to prevent the breaking or parting at the corners or other places of sewing-machine covers, or similar boxes which are exposed to strain and liable to be broken unless strongly protected; and the invention consists in making the lower molding which embraces the sewing-machine cover, or any one or more of the moldings em bracing the same, of narrow veneers, which are glued together, and in forming the com-.
bined veneer molding thus made in one single length, and placing it around the cover or box, thus preventing the necessity of interposing additional fastenings or of specially jointing the pieces at the corners where such boxes are most apt to become injured.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the casing or body of the box orcover, and B is the molding placed around the same. This molding is, as clearly stated, composed of narrow veneers, as indicated in Fig. l, and it is made by placing and securing the several veneers together, then shaping the molding, and finally applying the entire molding around the box so that its ends meet at one side or end of the box, as indicated at a a, Fig. 2.
It is evident that this invention is only applicable to boxes or covers having rounded corners, substantially like that shown in Fig. 2, as otherwise the molding could not be so bound around the box without breaking as to conform to the shape of the same.
Thisimprovementmateriallystrengthensthe boxes or covers to which it is applied without injuring the appearance of the same or requiring additional fastening or strengthening devices by which the cost might be enhanced, and their appearance impaired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A continuous band, 13, made of narrow strips of veneering glued together and molded into shape, combined with the round-cornered cover A, as and for the purpose described.
EVELYN F. FRENCH.
