T M PERRIN. GEM"MOUNT|'NG. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16; 1929. I
Pategted June 28, 1921.
TOIJBERT M. PERRIN, OF BOZEMAN, MONTANA.
GEM-MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 28, 1921..
Application filed .Tune 16, 1920. Serial No. 389,331.
To all whom it may concern:
o it known that I, Tonnnnr M. PERHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gem- Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gem mountings which while particularly desirable and useful for mounting the gems or stones of rings and other articles of jawelry, maybe used in any situation or for any purpose where it would prove practical and effective.
.One object of my invention is the provision of a detachable or separable gem mounting which will permit the use of the mounting for different gems or stones according to the desire of the user, thus making the mounting highly commendable for the instant application of any birth-stone desired, and which will retain the gem in the proper position at all times.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a gem mounting of the character described which 'will permit of the instant application or detachment of the gem while insuring a most ornamental and attractive appearance and display of the gem and which will be capable of manufacture at a low price.
To attain the objects stated and such others as belong to an invention of this character the improvement consists of a gem mounting embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substan tially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claims.
In order that the construction in detail and the manner of using my gem mounting may be readily understood and its many features of merit be appreciated I invite attention to the accompanying drawings showing a gem mounting constructed according to my invention, the right to make any changes which fall within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims being reserved, and in said drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a finger ring employing my gem mounting, showing the highly embellished and attractive vexterior appearance of the ring when provided with my mounting.
Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal sectional view of the gem mounting and a portion of the ring, such view being on. a large scale to illustrate more clearly the novel construction of the mounting.
Fig. 3 represents a top plan view of the gem retaining sleeve or member.
Fig. 4; represents a side elevation of said member.
Fig. 5 represents a bottomplan view. of the retaining member, and
Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of a. novel hand implement for applying and removing the gem retaining member.
The invention for the purpose of illustration is shown in connection with. a finger ring A having in its crown portion a threaded opening B formed at its upper edge with an annular countersink or depression C, which in use forms the seat flanges D formed on the. split portion or section E of the threaded retaining member F, said retaining flange being formed with a gem engaging recess G fitting the edge H of the gem J to clamp the gem in place in the retaining member, as most clearly seen in Fig. 2.
The threaded gem retaining sleeve or member it will be noted engages the threaded opening B of the article and when the web F isengaged by the kerf K in the stem L of the implement M, the said threaded member is drawn down into the threaded opening and the sections E of said member are drawn inwardly causing the recess H of the retaining flanges D, and the retaining portions or flanges to grip or clamp the gem and retain it in position, as shown in Fig. 2.
In operation the gem is inserted in the recess of the retaining flanges of the retaining member and said member is screwed into the threaded opening of the article and during such action the gem is clamped in proper position with reference to the article in connection with which it is used, the hand implement being employed for insertingand removing the retaining member with gem, as will be readily understood.
It will be understood by persons skilled in the art that this mounting will fill a long felt want in an efficient and practical manfor the retaining.
ner and that it provides an ornamental with an article formed with a threaded openannular depression around ing having an a threaded sleeve fitting sald its upper edge,
threaded opening and formed at its upper with an article formed with athreaded" opening having an annular depression "around its upper edge, a threaded sleeve fitting said threaded opening and formed at its upper end with slits providing a series of yielding gem engaging portions, said portions being provided with a flange to fit the depression around the opening in the article and saidflanges also having recesses and a gem fitting in said recesses, said sleeve being formed atiits lower edge wlth a web to receive an implement for applying and removing the sleeve; 7
3. In a gem-mounting,"the combination with an article provided with a threaded opening and a surrounding seat or depression for the gem, a threaded gem carrylng member having a surrounding flange at its upper edge forming a gem engaging portion fitting said depression, a gem engaged by said engaging portion and retained in proper relation to the member and depression.
4L. In a gem mounting, the combination with an article provided With'a threaded opening and a surrounding seat or depression r'or the gem, a threaded gem carrying member fitting the threaded opening and provided with slits forming sections having each a gem engagingflange, and a gem secured in place by said flange '5.In a gem mounting the combination with an article provided witha threaded opening, a gem carrying member formed with a series of slits providing yielding sec-. 'tions to engage the gem and also exteriorly threaded to engage said threaded opening and provided with a web adapted to-be engaged by a hand implement for inserting and removing said member, said web extending across the lower edge of the gem carrying number.
' In testlmony whereof I afliX my signature.
