Specification of Letters Patent.

lowing is a specification.
Heretofore in erecting tunnel linings the practice has been, in the case of cast iron lined tunnels, to connect each segment of a new ring or arch to the last erected ring by means of screw bolts through the circumferential flanges and-similarly to bolt the ends of the segments to one another in the longitudinal joints. In the case of lining c'omprisin concrete blocks having projections and grecesses the projections of one block entered, the recesses in another block or blocks of the previous ring or arch as the new ring segments were installed and the newly erected blocks were held in place by jacks of the shield until the completion of the ring. In addition to the foregoing shores and tie rods were used to hold the lining in position and form.
The object of my invention is to support each segment or block of the upper part of the tunnel lining ring or arch as soon as erected and to hold the same in its true position for a desired period while all the other segments or blocks of.the ring or'arch are being, erected.
In carrying out my invention I provide beams or bars extending longitudinally within the end portion of the tunnel lining being erected, and I support said beams against several of the adjacent erected ringsand against the new segments of the rinv being erected in the true cylindrical surface required by the tunnel plans. Any desired number of said beams may be used in'connection with the installation of a tunnel 1ining and in such a manner that the combined action of such beams will be such that any ring or segment can, by adjustment of such a beam or beams in cooperation therewith, be
. corrected for departure from position or true cylindrical surface and supported in same until permanently held, as by packing, such as gravel, used exterior to thering in the space between the outside of the tunnel lining and the wall of the excavation eontainin it.
My invention further comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof wherein- Figure 1 is an end elevation illustrating my improvements within a tunnel lining;

The tunnel lining illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises segments or blocks 1 arranged end to end in ringlike form, which may be of any usual construction. In the form shown the segments 1 have projections 2 on one side and recesses 3 on the opposite side, the projections of one segment or block entering the recesses.

When the blocks are erected it is customary to install the lower central blockand apply the other blocks in position in anupward direction, so that the blocks being installed above a 'horizontal line have been temporarily retained in the manner first before described, but there has been a tendency for such blocks to depart from the desired position ortrue cylindrical surface, as when the retaining jacks of the shield have been removed from the blocks. To support blocks of one or more rings that have been installed as well as to support blocks of a ring being installed I provide beams or bars 4 supported to extend longitudinally within a tunnel lining in contact with such blocks, to sustain them in position or restore them to true position in case of deviation therefrom.
In the example illustrated I provide a frame 5, which may be of any suitable con,-
struction, adapted to rest upon the bottom portion of a tunnel lining, and shown having beams 6 and arch-like members 7 spaced from the inner surface of the tunnel lining to support the beams or bars 4. In the example illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 a screw 10 and 'a roll 14 is provided upon each arch-like member 7 for each bar 4 spaced and disposed in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel, so that the two sets of screws may operate at different distances apart upon. a beam 4, and the latter may roll upon such spaced rolls for longitudinal adjustment. Means other than screws may be provided to move the beams 4 toward the segments 1 and toretain said beams in set position. In Figs. 6 and 7 a cam-member 17 is mounted upon a pin or shaft 18, carried by plates 9 of member .7, said cam-member preferably being provided with a handle 17 for its operation. Said members 17 will be mounted upon supporting members 7 in relation to the beams 4 to operate and retain them. By rotating the cam-members 17 in one direction the beams 4 will be appropriately moved a ainst the segments 1 and be there retai-ne and by rotatin s'aid cam-members reversely the beams 4 will bereleased from the segments.
In accordance with my improvements the beams 4 may be set by screws 10' or cammembers 17 to bear against segments or blocks of rings that have been erected to retain them in position and when the segments or blocks of a new ring have been erected up to'the spring-like or transverse center of the tunnel the adjacent beams 4 The bars 4 are shown in the form hile the beams 4 similar adjustment of beams 4 will be made for the blocks of a new ring to be set, and
when necessary the frame 5 will be moved forwardly and the beams 4 set in required position to permit the erection of the segments,

By reason of the independent adjustabilit of .the several beams their action. is me that a ring segment can be corrected for departure from desired position or true cylindrical surface by a simple adjustment of the appropriate beam or, beams, .whereby to prevent any segment from displacement inwardly of the tunnel lining. One or more beams 4 may" be used for a segment being erected. The beams 4 may maintain the segments or blocks in. proper position until the space around the lining within the excavation in theground is charged with packing, such as gravel, as'in accordance with Letters Patent granted to me on July 31, 1917, No. 1,235,233, whereby displacement of the rings and segments thereof is prevented when the beams 4 are being adjusted and release the segments. v i j Having thus described my invention, what I ilaim and desire to secure by Letters Paten 1s:
