Description
L. TOMCHIN. WATCH. 'APPLICATION mu) Aus.\2.'192o.
Patented June 21, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WATCH.
Specification 01 Letters Patent;
Patented June 21, 1921.
Application filed August 12, 1920. Serial No. 402,939.
To all 20 7mm. it may concern Be it known that I, Louis TOMOHIN, a-
pendents on necklaces, etc, and for use on wristlets,the main object of the invention being to adapt the same watch for use for either purpose named. in other words I produce an interchangeable watch in the sense that it is alternately convertible into a wrist watch, or into a pendent for neck :wear, according to preference, the transposition being effected by simple means susceptible of convenient manipulation;and the invention consisting in the specific combination and arrangement of parts described and claimed,-the distinctive feature being the provision of detachable coupling devices whereby the watch may be made fast, alternately and successively, to flexible connections adapting it either for wrist or neck wear, according to circumstances or requirements, as hereinafter fully set forth. In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a front elevation of my improved watch, illustrating its use as a pendent for neck wear;
Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same watch illustrz ting its incorporation in a wrist band;
Fig. 3, is a side view of the watch;
Fig. 4c, is a rear View of the watch face plate, removed;
Fig. 5, is a front view of the watohwithout its face plate, and with the casing partly broken away to show the peripheral coupling shoulders;
Fig. 6, is a front view of one of the auxiliary coupling devices;
Fig. 7, is a side view thereof;
Fig. 8, is a rear view of the cover thereof;
Fig. 9, is an end view thereof; and Fig. 10, is a front elevation of one of said auxiliary coupling members, without its'cover plate.
The watch ,W, is mounted in a works frame or casing C, in a manner well known in the plate art,-C, being the usual face plate fitting over the front of said works frame.
Peripherally the casing C, is formed with a plurality of differently positioned shoulders c, c, for engagement with interlocking mechanism constituting part of each of the auxlliary coupling devices A, A, which latter are preferably, although not necessarily, identical in form and construction, so that when both are attached to the watch casing G, as in F igs; 2 and 5, a uniform bilaterally symmetrical appearance will result. As shown particularly in Fig. 5, of the drawings, the peripheral coupling shoulders c, c, are formed on three sides of the casing C, so that the watch W, can be used either as a pendent to a necklace ribbon or other means of suspension N, as indicated in Fig. 1, or may be interposed between the ends of the wrist band B, as indicated in the aforesaid Fig. 2.
In the drawings, for convenience, the
watch casing'C, is shown as'of octagonal configuration peripherally, although it may obviously be of round, square, or of any other circumferential shape without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect, the essential feature being the provision of the plurality of diflerently positioned peripheral coupling shoulders c, c, on the casing C, so correlated as to afford means whereby the watch may be attached on opposite sides, by means of duplicate coupling members A, A, to a lateral band, as B, in Fig. 2, or by means of the single coupling member A, in engagement with the intermediate coupling shoulders, as in Fig. 1, as a pendent to a neck lace or equivalent N, as in Fig. 1. In this connection it may be noted that the watch stem w, protrudes from the lower or fourth side of the casing C, diametrically opposite to the coupling shoulders c, 0, used in connection with a coupling member A, for suspending the watch as a pendent to a flexible neck loop; and that the numerals on the watch dial are inverted as viewed in the drawings, but nevertheless are in proper po sition for convenient observation by the wearer, whether worn on neck or wrist.
As adjuncts to each watch W, thus mounted in a suitable peripherally shouldered casing- C, it is designed to provide two auxiliary coupling devices A, A, provided with latch mechanism adapted to interlock with the coupling shoulders c, c, on the casing, and these coupling members may be duplicates in shape and construction, or otherwise, as may be "found most expedient, the essential feature in this respect being a plurality of coupling devices forming part of the watch set or kit, whereby the watch is rendered interchangeable and convertible either into a wrist watch, or into a pendent for neck wear, as set forth.
Hence, while 1 herein show and describe coupling devices A, A, which are duplicates in form and construction, I do not limit myself in this particular, since obvious mechanical equivalents and expedients may be resorted to with like result. With this understanding, (4, represents the base plate, and a, the cover plate of one of my auxiliary coupling devices, either of which plates may be formed with the loop a for connection with the necklace or ribbon N, or with the wrist band B. Fulerumed on the stud a, of the base plate a, are the twin latch levers Z, Z, between the latch arms Z, Z, of which is interposed the expansible spring 8, which tends constantly to separate the levers and thrust them against the flanged sides of the base at, as shown in Fig. 10, with the ends of their finger arms Z Z protuberant and accessible as means for manually manipulating the latch levers against the resistance of the spring 8, for the purpose of looking or releasing the latch hooks Z*, Z, as related to the peripheral coupling shoulders c, a, on the casing C, of the watch W. Thus when the latch hooks are interlocked with the coupling shoulders c, c, of the casing as shown in Fig. 5, the spring 8, insures positive copulation between the said interlocking parts until both latch levers Z, Z, are retracted simultaneously against its resistance sufliciently to clear the hooks Z, Z", from contact with said shoulders c, 0.
By my invention of detachable auxiliary coupling members forming essential parts of the watch outfit, l render the watch duplex in function, and obviate the necessity for duplication, which is especially advanta: geous where the more expensive grades of watches are concerned.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In combination, a watch of the character designated, a casing therefor formed with diametrically opposed peripheral shouldered recesses and with an intermediate peripheral shouldered recess, the exterior edges of said recesses being flat and extending in planes transversely at right angles to the central axis of the watch, and detachable interchangeable auxiliary coupling;- devices formed with flat bases abutting against the said flat edges on the peripheral recesses in the watch casing, and with pivotally crossed spring latch levers adapted to engage with said shouldered recesses in the watch casing, for the purpose described.
LOUIS TOMCHIN.
