Description

|01 I l l I IHHHHHIH ILPETEHS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
LYMAN JACOBS AND E. C. LANDON, OF OASTILE, NEV YORK.
MODE OF ATTACHING- TOPS TO SEATS OF CARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,821, dated November 20, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LYMAN JACOBS and E. C. LANDON, of the town of Castile, in the county of lVyoming, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching Tops of Carriages to Their Seats; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l, is a frontelevation of seat; Fig. 2, a bottom view of the top and Fig. 3, a front view of top and seat attached as hereinafter described.
The nature of our invention consists in removing tops of carriages from their seats without removing the rails, by means of grooves in the frames of the tops, together with the mode of fastening said tops to their seats.
The back and sides of the top are trimmed in a manner corresponding with t-he seat so that when the top and seat are attached they appear as one or an undivided seat, the outside trimming extending sutliciently down to conceal their connection. l/Vhen the top is placed upon the seat the back rail A, A, enters the corresponding groove C, C, of top as represented in red lines in Fig. 3, and is therefore concealed. The back rail is fastened at the corners of the seat, supported by the standards B, B, which extending down the inside ofthe back to the bottom of the seat turn suiiciently to admit of one or more screws; these standards have threaded holes (c, a,) for the purpose of screwing more firmly the top to the seat.
D, D, are beveled nuts with flanges on either side by which they are fastened to the seat.
C, C, Fig. 2, represent the groove in shape and size corresponding with the rail A, though we do not regard this correspo-ndence as essential.
The bolts F, F, with threads screw from the outside of the back through the standards at a, a, into the nuts Gr, G, which are fastened on the inside of back under the trimming.
H, H, are irons near the front ends of the sides of the top, which may be fastened o-n the inside and at the bottom across which they run, then extending downward as represented at I, I, each having a hole through which the bolts E, E, screw into the beveled nuts, D, D.
Fig. 3, is a represent-ation of the top attached to the seat by means above described, in which the rail A, bolts F, F, and E, E, are concealed.
lVhat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The above described method of concealing the back rails of seats to carriages by means of grooves in the back of the tops.
2. And we further claim in combination with the above grooves the mode of fastening tops to seats of carriages by means of beveled nuts and bolts as represented at E, E, and D, D, Fig. l and F, F, and G, G, Fig. 2.
LY'MAN JAooBs. E. o. LANDON.
