STRIKING-BLOCK FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
tssaoss.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. July 19, 1920. Serial No. 397,168.
To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, Louis A. Home, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Striking- Block for Railway-Cars, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a striking block for railway cars and more particularly that .form' of striking block which is formed of single piece provlded wlth an aperture adapted to allow the insertion and withdrawal of a plain shank coupler so that the device as a whole forms an integral striking block and carry iron.
One of the objects of my invention is to providea' striking block of the class de scribed with a removable wear piece held in position by contact with the shank of the coupler, thus dispensing with bolts or other fastening means independent of the coupler. Another object of my invention is to provide the removable wear piece with a curved surface adapted to contact with the coupler shank so as to prevent the formation of a groove in the contact piece by longitudinal movement of the coupler.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate some forms" of striking blocks made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation, the coupler shank being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2- 2 of Fig. '1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4= of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing a further modifiCEltlOIL' Fig. 6 is a view similar .to Fig. 3, but showing a still further modification, Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 77 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view showinga further modification.
10 indicates a portion of the end of a railway car to which a one piece striking block 11 is secured by means of bolts or rivets 12. Formed in the striking block 11 is an opening 13 adapted to IQCQIXB the shank 14 of a plain shank coupler so that the device forms an integral striking block and carry iron. As thecarry iron 15 isintegral with the striking block and not capable. of being removed when it becomes worn, I provide the device with a removable wear piece, one form 16 of which is shown as in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. In this form of the device the wear piece 16 is provided with a pair of flanges 17 adapted to contact with the front and rear faces of thecarry iron 15 so that the weight of the coupler shank 14 will hold the device in position without the useof any other fastening means. In order to prevent the formation of a groove in the upper face of the wear piece by the longitudinal movement of the coupler shank 14. which groove would interfere with the proper lateral movement of the shank, I provide the wear piece with a curved upper face 18 adapted to contact with the lower face of the couple-r shank. By this con struction I prevent the formation of such a' groove until the part16 is substantially worn out.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification in whlch the portlon of the striking block forming the carry iron is made Patented June 21, 1921.
shaped as shown at 15 and the wear piece 16 is replaced by a roller 25 provided with cylindrical trunnions 19 engaging with pockets 20 in the striking block 11. This roller 18 is made largest at its central portion so as to" present a curved surface to the coupler shank in all positions.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a still further modification in which the roller 25 is replaced by a square member 21 having all four sides curved and provided with square bearing blocks 22 in place, of the trunnions 19, the pockets 20 being correspondingly changed in form to receive the square parts 22.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a still further modification in which the carry iron 15 is made U-shaped, but has its open side arranged at the top in place of therear as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this form of the device the wear piece 23 is square and is provided with two curved faces 24 either of which may be presented to the coupler shank by turning the piece through an angle of 90 degrees.
In Fig. 8 I have shown another modification somewhat similar to the modification.
provided with four curved faces 26, 26 26 -and 26 respectively. 'These bases are made of varying height so that they may be presented to the underface of the coupler shank l4 successively as the shank becomes worn, thus maintainingit at substantially the same height during the entire life of the bearing member.
In all the forms of my device it isevident that the wear piece is held in position by contact with the coupler shank alone, thus dlspensing with all bolts or fastening devices independent of the coupler shank, and the wear piece is so shaped as to prevent the formation of a longitudinal groove whir would limit necessary lateralmovement the coupler shank. I amaware that it has heretofore been proposed, to provide a one piece striking block with a wear piece bolted or otherwise secured in position by means independent of the coupler shank and further more that ithas been proposed to provide a striking block with a suspended laterally swinging carry iron the upper face of which is curved to compensate for the slanting position which it assumes upon swinging later ally, and I do not wish to be understood as claiming such construction as-part of my invention.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a coupler provided with a shank, of a striking block pro- 1 said striking block being provided with a coupler shank wear surface, said wear surface being incapable of lateral movement and being curved in a direction at right angles to the length of the coupler shank.
2. The combination with a coupler provided with a shank, of a striking block having an aperture adapted to'allow the insertion and removal of said coupler shank, and a removable wear piece interposed between the lower face of said coupler shank and said striking block, said wear piece being held in position by contact with said coupler shank, said wear piece having a coupler shank wear surface curved in a direction-at right angles to the length of the coupler shank.
3. The combination with a coupler pro vided with. a shank, of a striking block provided with an opening adapted to allow the insertion and removal of the coupler shank,
and a removable channel shaped wear piece having a wear surface curved in a direction at right angles to the length of the coupler shank, theflanges of said weal piece contacting with the front and rear faces of the striking block to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the said parts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and afiixed my seal.
Louis A. Home [n 6.1
