Application filed May 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES NEMETHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy and has for its principal object the production of simple and efficient means for shooting a glider through the air so as to afford amusement to children and young folks.
Another object of the invention is to produce a glider which is constructed so that same may be easily assembled or disassembled and so that theparts which are most likely to become injured may be easily replaced by new parts. I
Another object of the invention is to produce a glider constructed so that same will fly smoothly through the air and take a straight course.
A. still further object of the invention is to generally improve upon toys of this character by providing a device which will be extremely simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, one which is eflicient and reliable in operation, while adapted to the purpose for which. it is desired.
l/Vith these and numerous other objects in view, the invention relates to certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
in the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof showing the forward wing or plane in section.
Fig. 4-. is a detailed perspective View of the glider block.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detailed perspective view of the forward end of the gun.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the rear plane, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary bottom plan View of the forward plane.
By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that -1 designates the gun which is provided with the longitudinal oove '2 having the undercut portions 3. if the forward end of the 1 I have provided the depending handle t.
The glider consists of the elongated body 5 which carries upon its bottom face the plate 6 for engaging the undercut portions 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the groove 2 in the gun 1. The body portion 5 is provided at its forward end with the enlarged head 7 which is provided adjacent its upper portions with the slot 8 for receiving the plane indicated generally by the numeral 9. This plane 9 consists of the square box-like structure indicated by the numeral 10 which carries upo-n its upper portion the plane 11 and it will be noted that this plane 11 is curved downwardly toward its end so as to have a tendency to lift the forward part of the glider when same is forced through the air. The plane 12 is attached to the bottom portion of the box-like structure 10 and both the bottom portion of the boxlO and the plane 12 are provided with the cut-out portion 13 so that.
the rear portion of the plane 9 may extend rearwardly of the end of the slot 8.
At the rear end of the body 5 there is provided another enlarged head 1% having the slot 15 therein which slot extends horizontally and this portion of the head also has the vertical slot 16. The vertical slot 16 is formed to receive the rudder 17 while the horizontal slot 15 is to receive the rear plane 18. This rear plane 18 it will be noted by referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing is curved upwardly in its rear so that when the glider is forced through the air this curved portion will have a tendency to allow the air to force the rear portion of the glider downwardly. This plane 18 is also provided with the ll-shaped cut-out portion 19 so that the rear portions thereof may extend in rear of the end of the slot 15'.
. The rear end of the head 14 terminates in the gripping finger 20 and is provided below this gripping finger 20 with a notch 21.
Fixedly attached to the handle 4 imme diately below the gun 1 I have provided the bow 22 which may be of any preferred construction and to which is attached the" string 24. When it is desired to fly the glider it will be "seen that same is inserted within the gun so that the body portion 5 will be within the groove 2 and the plate 6 within the undercut portions 3 and the string will be in engagement with the notch 21 so that the operator may pull rearwardly upon the gripping finger 20 thus bending the bow 22 so that when the fin er 20 is released this how will force the g ider forwardly so that the air will be engaged .by the planes 9 and 18 thus allowing the glider to fly for considerable distance depending upon the strength and force oi the how 22. it will also he noted that the only portions of my device which will have any tendency to become injured will he the planes 9 and 18 and the rudder 17 so that l have provided the slots 8, l5, and 16 so that these parts may be repaired or replaced by new parts it so desired. @it course, it is to be understood, that these planes will be made from strong material so that they will stand considerable rough usage before it will be found necessary to replace them by other parts. I do not wish to limit myself to any particular material.
From the foregoing description, taken'in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended description. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, ll do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and de scribed other than as claimed.
naving thus described my invention what ll claim as new is:
10 glider of the class described come prising a body portion having enlarged heads at each end thereof, a plane situated upon forward enlarged head and being curved downwardly toward its rear, and a plane situated upon the rear enlarged head and having its rear edge curved upwardly.
2. A glider of the class described comprising a body portion having enlarged heads at each end thereof, a slot provided in the forward enlarged head, a plane situated within said slot, said rear head. pro vided with a horizontal slot and a vertical slot, a plane situated in said horizontal slot and a rudder carried within said vertical slot.
lln testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES NEMETHY.
