Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BOHLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper Drinking-Cups, of

which the following is a specification.

Thisinvention relates to paper drinking cups of the type adapted to be used once only.

Prior to my invention such cups have been made of paper which'has been rendered water-proof by the application thereto of a wax, such as paraffin; and they have been quite satisfactory except in warm climates and on warm days when they have a tendency to stick together.

I have discovered that when the stock of which the paper is made on the paper making machine contains a suitable sizing, which is added to the stock in the beating tub, such for instance as a good quality rosin size, that such sizing may be subsequently employed as a water-proofing agent for the paper.

The paper will not be strictly water-proof but will be partially water-proof and sufficiently so to last for a period of time suitable for practical purposes.

However, I have further discovered that when the paper sheet with such a tub sizing is calendered by what is usually termed the wet calender process that its pores are more tightly closed and a glossy finish formed on one side of the sheet or the calendered surface is more dense than the noncalendered surface, and the water-proofing quality of the paper is increased.

A drinking cup made of such a stock has all the necessary qualifications adapting it for practical uses.

However, I have further discovered thatv itis a distinct advantage to arrange the glossy surface on the interior of the cup next the contents, as in such case the contents are prevented from immediatelysaturating the paper; and arlip engaging roll or bead which may be provided at the upper ed e of the cup mav have a glossy surface for the engagement therewith of the up er lip of the user.

embodied in a conical cup, such for instance as disclosed in my Patent #1,245,313, No-

vember 6, 1912, but it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it may be applied to other drinking cups, said conical form being typical of one of the many forms well known in the art.

Figure 1, represents in side elevationand partial vertical section a conical. cup substantially similar to the cup of my patent aforesaid and embodying my present invention. V

Fig. 2, is a plan view of a blank from which the cup is made.

Fig. 8, is an enlarged vertical section of a portion of the blank to illustrate the idea of a tub-sized wet-calendered paper having a glossy finish on one side.

The quadrantal blank which herein is tub sized and wet calendcred rendering it partially Waterproof, with a gloss or finish on one side only and is out from the paper sheet prepared as above set forth, has a curved side 10 which as shown includes more than 90, and two straight edges 12 and 13, the edge 12 being disposed radially to a center 15, and the edge 18 being approximately in parallel with a line extended radially from the center 15, hence being a chord.

The center 15 is taken as the point for the apex of the cup.

From one side or edge of the blank two tabs 20 and 25 are extended outwardly in contiguous relation and separated by a line of severance 21, which is extended from the center 15 in a radial direction.

Both tabs 20 and 25 are of approximately quadrantal form.

As shown, the tab 20 has a curved edge 22 and a straight edge at one side formed by the line of severance 21, its other side being in continuation of the straight side 13 of the main body. This tab 20 is adapted to be rolled or bent into conical form at the outside of the cup to assist in providing a tight closure at the apex of the cup at the outside.

The tab 25 has a curved edge 26 and a about the inside of the apex of the cup in conical formation.

When the cup is completed and both tabs are rolled or bent into conical formation, one inside and the other outside of the apex of the cup, a tight closure is provided at the apex of the cup and furthermore the cup is strongly reinforced at such portion.

In making the cup the tub-sized wetcalendered paper blank is preferably arranged with its glossy surface 35 on the interior of the cup which insures a more lasting partial waterproof quality than if reversely arranged; and, furthermore, in case the cup is provided at its upper edge with an outwardly extended roll or bead the glossy surface Will be extended over said roll or bead and adapted to be engagedby the upper lip, which is preferable.

As before stated, however, other forms or structures of cups may be employed in lieu of that here shown.

I claim:

1. As an article of manufacture, a drinking cup composed of paper which is tubsized and wet calendered, rendering it partiallywater'proof and providing a glossy surface on one side only, and arranging the paper so that the glossy surface is at the interior of the cup.

2, As an article of manufacture, a drinking cup with a rolled edge for the engagement therewith of the lip, said cup and its edge being composed of paper which is tubsized and wet calendered, thereby rendering it partially Waterproof and providing a glossy surface on one side only, and arranging it with its glossy surface on the interior of the cup, and-on the upper side of the rolled edge for the engagement therewith of the upper lip of the userg' In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
