Description

G. J. BOHLMAN.
PAPER CUP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB- H1917.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
UNITED STATES FATE 1 ornrcn GEORGE J. IBOHLMAN, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN WATER SUPPLY COMPANY OF NEW ENGLAND, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORA- PAPER our.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed February 1, 1917. Serial No. 146,021.
To all whom itmay concern:
1 Be it known that I, Gnoncn J. BOHLMAN, a citizen of the United States residing at Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 'Improvement in Paper Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a paper cup or rec ptacle of conical form, and composed of a single piece of paper. .In the construction of cups of this formation much difficulty has been encountered in closing tightly the lower end, or apex, of the same, and also to make such portion of the cup strong and durable.
The object of this invention is to overcome this difliculty, and also improve the completed article, as well as to reduce its cost of manufacture.
In carrying out my invention I employ a blank of approximately quadrantal. form having two tabs extended outwardly in the same direction from one of its radial sides, which tabs are continguously disposed, and one of said tabs bein into conical form, and arranged upon the inside of the conical cup at the apex thereof, and the other adapted to be bent into conical form and arranged upon the outside of the conical cup at the apex thereof, said tabs serving to tightly close the apex of the cup, and also to substantially reinforce and strengthen such portion of the cup.
Figure 1 is a side view of the paper cup embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 1s a vertical sectpn of taken on the line 22, Fig. 1. r
Fig; 3 is a view illustrating the rolling of the inside tab at the beginning of the formation of the cup.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank.
The quadrantal blank hasa curved side 10, which, as shown, includes more than 90, and two straight edges 12 and 13, the edge 12 being disposed radially to a center 15; and the edge 13 being approximately in parallel with a line extended radially from the center 15, hence being a chord. The center 15 is taken as the point of the apex of the cup.
the cup From one side or edge of the blank two I tabs 20 and 25' are extended outwardly in adapted to be bent center 15 in a radial direction. The tab 20 isof approximately quadrantal form. As
. shown it has a curved edge 22, and a straight edge at one side formed by the line of severance 21, its other side being in continuation of the straight side 13 of the main body-portion. This tab 20 is adapted to be rolled or bent into conical form at the inside of the cup to provide a tight closure at the apex of the cup at the inside.
The tab 25 is of triangular formation, it
having a straight edge 26, and another straight edge formed by the line of severance 21, and extended radially from the center 15, its other side being the line of attachment with the main body-portion and disposed in continuation of the straight side 12. Said tab 25 is designed to be bent or rolled about the outside of the apex of the cup in conical formation. When the cup is completed and both tabs are rolled or bent into conical formation, one inside and the other outside of the apex of the cup, a tight closure is produced at the apex of the cup, and furthermore said portion of the cup is strongly reinforced.
I claim:
1. The conical cup herein described composed of a blank of approximatel quadrantal form having two tabs exten ed outwardly from one of its straight edges, one adapted to be bent into conical form and to be arranged inside of the apex of the cup, and the other adapted to be bent into conical form and to be arranged at the outside I of the apex of the cup.
2. The conical cup herein described composed of a blank of approximately quadrantal form having two tabs extended outwardly from one of its straight edge, and contiguously disposed, and having a line of severance between said tabs which is approximately radial to the center about which the blank is bent to form the cup, one of said tabs being adapted to be bent into conical form and tobe arranged at the inside of the apex of the cup, and the other tab adapted to be bent into conical form and to be arranged "at the outside of the apex of the cup.
3. The conical cup herein described composed of a blank of approximately quadrantal form having two tabs extended outwardly from one of its straight edges, one
of said tabs being approximately quadranname to this specification in the presence of tal, and the other triangular, one of their two subscribing Witnesses. straight edges being formed by a line of severance extended radially from the cen- GEORGE BOHLB'IAN' 5 ter about which the blank is bent to form WVitnesses:
the cup. AMOS L. TAYLOR,
In testimony whereof, I have signed my ELIZABETH M. HANSON.
