LIQUID FUEL BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.9. 1920.

N; Y., A. CORPORATION OF NEW/V YORK.
LIQUID-FUEL BURNER.
Application filed April 9,
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. ERICKSON, residing in Mamaroneck, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Fuel Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to liquid fuel burners, and more particularly to improved spray nozzles of such devices.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple and efiicient nozzle of the character mentioned, which is reliable and economical in use and which is of few parts not likely to get out of order.
A further object is to provide an improved atomizing device for liquids which possesses features of structural superiority and functional advantages.
A further object is to combine an efficient burner, strainer and atomizer in one device.
Other objects and advantages will be in part noted hereinafter in connection with the following description of the accompanying drawings, which illustrate apreferred embodiment of the invention and wherein,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section, and
Fig. 2 is a top view with the retaining cap and diaphragm removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a pipe or liquid conduit 1 having a threaded connection at its end with a nozzle tube 2. This nozzle tube is site straight sides 10 provided with a central bore 3 which is en larged toward the outer end to constitute a chamber 4, and a recess 5 separated by a cir-' cular ledge or shoulder and straining cylinder 7, which may be of brass or other suitable metal, is provided to fit within the chamber 4, and seat at its inner end against the shoulder dividing said chamber and the bore 3. The walls of cylinder 7 are foraminous, having a number of small apertures 8 therethrough, and the outer end of the cylinder is closed by an integral cap having an overhanging flange 9 with oppoand intermediate curved sides 11. The dimension (if-flange 9 is such as to fit thetube recess 5 and support the cylinder on shoulder 8 with apertured of the cylinder spaced, shown,
6. An atomizing Specification of Letters Patent.

from the walls of chamber 4 so that the liquid may pass therebetween. The outer surface of the cap flange 9 has a central small and circular recess 12 communicating with the straight sides 10 by tangential channels or grooves 13. in the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing two of these grooves, opposite one another are shown, but in some circumstances a larger number of grooves may be employed.
A flat disk 14, comprising a diaphragm,
has a central discharge orifice 15 and is positioned overv the outer end of the nozzle tip and is retained by a threaded cap 16 which screws on the outer end of the nozzle. The dimension of the parts described is such that the cylinder 7 is free to rotate, while the nozzle tube, the disk 14 and cap 16 are relatively rigid and fast together.
In operation, oil, or suitable liquid, enters the tube bore 3 under pressure, and is forced through cylinder apertures 8. being somewhat broken up and strained thereby and then passes outwardly and enters through channels 13 to recess 12 of the cylinder end. Passage of the liquid through the channels 13, as described, imparts rotation to the liqnid whereby the oil is further broken up and atomized prior to its discharge through disk aperture 15 to be ignited.
The construction and operation of the burner. as described. tend to prevent an clogging of the liquid therein and also insure u discharged spray of uniform character. It will be understood, of course, that my improved burner may be employed in furnaces and wherever desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. The combination in a liquid fuel atom izer of a nozzle comprising an integral body portion having an end recess and a bore of two, succeeding din-metrical dimensions, whereof the forward dimension exceeds the rearward dimension, a perforated cylinder having one open end and a closure plate at its other end, said plate co-acting with the nozzle end to comprise a chamber for the reception of fuel prior to its emission, said plate centeringly engaging in the aforesaid recess, and said cylinder at open end gaging the rearward or smaller bore- Lion of the body portion of the nozzle. an annular chamber for fuel passage is prised between the perforated cylinder and larger bore-portion, close to the fuel reception chamber, and means of communication between said annular chamber and fuel reception chamber.
2. An atomizer for liquid fuel comprising a nozzle portion whose axial bore is concentrically enlarged toward its forward end, and whose forward extremity is provided with a still larger concentric recess, a hollow, perforated cylinder, open at one end, fittin in the smaller diametral portion of sai nozzle and forming with the larger diametral portion of said nozzle an annular chamber that is in communication with the nozzle interior by way of the perforations through said cylinder, a forward end closure for said cylinder in form of a plate which fits said concentric recess, said plate having reduced side portions, to provide clearance spaces in said recess, a central, circular chamber in the front face of said plate and tangential slots communicating from said side portions to said chamber for the flow of liquid fuel thereto, and end closure means for said nozzle and late with an orifice for the efllux of atomized fuel from said central chamber.
Inwit'ness whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
