Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Application filed October 7, 1920. Serial No. 415,281.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. TRAINOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Washington and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Tops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in stoves, and in this particular instance, it has more special reference to tops for large cook-stoves and ranges such as are used in hotels and the like, where a continuous fire is kept going, although, it is not to be restricted to this particular use.
The object of the invention is to provide a stove top which is removable and reversible, thus providing an effective remedy for preventing warping which usually occurs due to the intense heat.
Another object of the invention is to generally improve upon devices of this class by providing a stove top which is equipped with the usual hole to be covered by a re movable lid, the wall of this hole being of V- shaped cross section so as to provide an effective seating for the lid regardless of which side of the top is up.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a removable stove top in the form of a plate, the supporting rib with which it is provided being so positioned that the surface of the plate will always be flush with the remainder of the top of the stove.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a conventional type of range or stove equipped with my improved removable top plate.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the plane of the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a removable top plate constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated, it will be seen that the letter S designates a conventional type of stove or range such as used in hotels and eating houses where a large stove is necessary, this stove being provided at one end with a relatively large open space 1 which is directly over the fire-box, and this space being surrounded by a continuous supporting ledge 2. My improved removable top plate is designated by the numeral 3, the same being preferably elongated in shape to fit effectively in the opening 2 in the top of the stove. Projecting from the edges of this plate and arranged intermediate the flat faces thereof, is a continuous supporting rib 1 which is adapted to rest on the ledge 2. It is to be noted that by placing the supporting rib in this position, either side of the plate will always be flush with the remainder of the top of the stove. At its center, this plate is provided with a relativel large circular hole or opening 5, the wall 0 which is of V-shaped cross section to provide a pair of inwardly beveled seats 6 adapted to provide an effective support for the beveled periphery of the usual removable lid 7. By providing this beveled seat arrangement, it will be seen that the lid may be effectively used regardless of which side of the plate is up.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that in case the plate should become warped from intense heat, it may be reversed and caused to assume its original shape by the heat which tends to again warp it upwardly. The fact is, that by occasionally reversing the plate, such warping may be en tirely eliminated. As before stated, the beveled seating arrangement for the lid permits the latter to be effectively used regardless of which side of the plate is positioned upwardly. These, and other advantages and features of my construction have, no doubt, become apparent from the foregoing description.
A careful consideration of the description taken in connection with the drawings is thought to be sufficient to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention relates, to obtain a clear understanding of the same. For this reason, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary.
I claim:
The combination with a stove top having an elongated rectangular opening over the fire-box, surrounded by ledges, a rectangular flat faced plate fitted in the opening and pro vided between its upper and lower faces with 5 a continuous supporting rib resting on said ledges and permitting said plate to be re moved and reversed, said plate being also provided with a central" circular hole, the wall of which is of V-shaped cross-section to provide inwardly beveled seats for the usual 10 lid. v .v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
