Dumping-Wagons.
Patented April 22, 1873.

Wzzm m V a AM, PHOTO-UTHOGRAFH/C 00 M Hosea/ml; Pnocssg) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN H. ADRIAANS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,111, dated April 22, 1873; application filed March 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ADRIAANS, of Washington, in the county of Washington and in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Trucks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isa perspective view of the front end of my device, and Fig. 2 is a like View of the rear end of the'same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The-design of my invention is to facilitate the excavation of streets for the purpose of laying sewers, gas, or water pipes, 8m; and to render such work practicable without occasioning obstruction to travel by the soil removed during such operation; and to this end said invention consists in a wheeled dumpingtruck, constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a truck having, preferably, a rectangular shape, and permanently inclosed at all points except at one end, A, which is provided with doors B, that when not closed may be swung outward against the contiguous sides of said car. The truck thus formed is mounted upon four caster-wheels, G, by means of which it may be readily moved in any direction. From the end of the truck opposite to the open end A a ledge, D, extends horizontally forward, and is suitably supported by means of two braces, E, which extend from its outer corners downward to the car end. Within the ledge D, at its center, is pivoted a nut, F, in such a manner as to oscillate in a vertical plane, and in a line fore and aft of the car, which nut receives a screw, G, that has a length about equal to the height of said truck, and at its lower end is pivoted within a supportin g-block or base, H.
When used as a dumping-truck the doors B are swung open and secured, the cart backed up to the point to be excavated, and the soil ever it is necessary to make an excavation are avoided, and most of the disagreeable features attending such operation removed.
The truck is especially valuable for use after a trench has acquired a considerable depth, as the workmen are enabled to throw the soil into the rear open end of said truck with the same case as upon the surface of the ground,
while the covered top of said device effectually prevents said soil from passing over or out of the same. 1
By means of the caster-rollers the truck can be adjusted to and operated in positions where it would be impracticable to employ an ordinary cart.
When not in use for the purpose of containin g and conveying earth the truck can be employed as a receptacle for the workmens tools, the doors enabling it to be securely enclosed.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new The hereinbefore-described dumping-truck A, inclosed at all points except its rear side, provided with the caster-rollers O, the ledge D, the nut F, and the screw G, and with or without the doors B, the whole adapted to receive earth from the shovels of workmen within a trench, substantially as and for the purpose specified. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of February, 1873.
JOHN H. ADRIAANS. Witnesses:
JAMES S. GRINNELL, Gno. S. PRINDLE.
