Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HARDING BROWN, OF PORTERS MILLS, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-BARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,810, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. BROWN, of Portel-s Mills, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Barrow, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my improved barrow adjusted for use as an ordinary wheelbarrow. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, adjusted for use as a hand barrel-barrow. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same adjusted for use as a wheelbarrow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved barrow for carrying barrels and other things, which may be used as a wheelbarrow or as a hand-barrow, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in the combination of the two cross-bars, the four side bars, the handles, the pivoted hanging side bars and the adjustable braces with each other; in the combination of the wheel provided with the sockets, and their set-screws, with the handles at one end of the barrow-frame; in the combination of the box or body with the barrowframe; and in the combination of the trian' gular block with the hanging side bars ot the barrow-frame, as hereinafter fully described.
A are two cross-bars, the inner edges of which are concaved to receive the sides ot' a barrel, and the ends of which are attached to the four side bars B near their inner ends. To the outer ends of the side bars B are attached, or upon them are formed, handles O. The connection between the cross-bars A and side bars B is strengthened by the braces D, as shown in Fig. 3. To the inner ends ot' the four side bars B are pivoted the upper ends of four bars E. The lower ends of the two bars E upon each side of the barrow are pivoted to each other. To the lower ends of the bars E, or to feet or blocks attached to said ends, are pivoted the lower ends of the four braces F. The upper ends of the braces F are bent over, are notched in their bends to receive the side bars VB, and are provided with pins f1 to rest in notches in the upper edges ot' the said side bars B, several notches being formed in each of said side bars to receive the said pins, so that the barrow may be expanded or contracted to adjust it for carrying a larger or a smaller barrel, as may be required. The bent upper ends of the braces F are provided with set-screws f2, the forward ends ot' which rest against the lower edges of the side bars B, and thus lock said side bars and braces in place when adjusted. G is a triangular block which may be placed in the angle between the bars E, for the lower end of the barrel to rest upon, and to keep thetwo parts of the barrow from being pressed toward each other. H is a wheel, the ends of the aXle ot' which are connected with sockets I of such a size as to receive and it upon the handles G where they are secured in place dctachably by setscrews t, so that the said wheel H can be conveniently attached and detached, as required. J is the body or box ofthe barrow, to the bottom of which are attached four pins to enter holes in the cross-bars A, and thus keep the said body or box J in place upon the barrowt'rame.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patl. The combination of the two cross-bars A, the four side bars B, the handles O, the pivoted hanging side bars E, and the adjustable braces F, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the wheel H, provided with the sockets I, and set-screws i', with the handles G at one end ot' the barrowframe, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the body J, with the barrow-frame A B O E F, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination ot' the triangular block G, with the hanging side bars E, ot' the barrow-frame A B C E F, substantially as shown and described.
JAMES HARDING BROWN.
