LIGHT-SUPPORT.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1921.
Application filed March 24, 1919. Serial No. 284,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SHERWOOD FARRIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Land, in the county of Volusia, State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Light-Support; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to supports and has for its object to provide a light support for electric lights or gas lights, wherein it will be possible to tilt the same at various angles. Also to provide the base of the support with a weighted spherical member, adapted to be moved in a base having a series of spring fingers, which engage the surface of the spherical weighted member whereby the weighted base may be retained in various positions.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement 'of parts as hereinafter set forth. shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the light support, showing the same in vertical po- Sition.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the base and spherical weighted member and showing the support in an inclined position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the base.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section take on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a spherical member, which is hollow and 2 a flange. Threaded in the member 1 as at 3 is a pipe 4, through which the wires 5 pass to the socket 6 of an electric light T. However it is to be understood that a flexible hose may be connected to the pipe 4. through which gas may be conducted to any form of burner that may be used.
The spherical member 1 has a chamber 8 and in this chamber when the support is in a vertical position lead is poured, thereby tionally engage the spherical member thereby in connection with the weight therein, ma ntain the standard at any position to whlch it may be moved, that is angular position. The fingers terminate at a point above the horizontal central line of the spherical member, thereby preventing the same from coming out of the depression 13 and at the same time keeping the member 1 in position.
\Vhen it is desired to remove the spherical member from the base, the base is held with one hand and the spherical member pulled out of the depression. It willalso be seen that the spherical member can easily be placed in the base by placing the same on the upper ends of the spring fingers and forcing the same downwardly into position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A light support comprising a base having a concave semi-spherical depression therein, integral spring arms spaced from each other and rising upwardly and extending outwardly and inwardly from the marginal edge of the semi-spherical depression in the base, a spherical member disposed Within the depression and frictionally held by the spring arms, a light bracket carried by said spherical member, the spring arms extending upwardly beyond the horizontal center of the spherical member and being spaced apart a greater distance than the width of the light bracket, thereby allowing the light bracket to be horizontally positioned.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES SHERWOOD FARRISS.
