APPLICATION FILED JULY?, 1920.

E I clin-noon ifflolallfwhvom t may concern'.- i :Be it known that we, CARL' NELSON and 'fr mann SNYDER, 'citizens ot the United States otlimericmand residents of Council Bluffs., in the 'county otPottawattamie and'State of have 'invented certain new and usel improvements in vCar-Doorsyof` which ""thfeollowingis a'specification;-
This invention relates'to doors'wfor grain .nears and particnla'rl` to novel means whereby a "door maybe eld1 in the opening by means which are readily detachable to permit the door sections to swing outwardly to tree thel grain so that notwithstanding the pressure oie the grain from within, the door may be manipulated to open it while at the same time the said door will withstand unusual pressure romvwithnin, without.. liabilo opening or being displaced.
'still further object ot' this invention is te produce a door 'for a grain car having prevision for supporting closure strips or at least, the bottom of a series of closure strips to provide a view,
4 tion wherein above the door so that` by use of the door and strips, the opening of a box car may be closed by means which are comparatively inexpensive and which will prove a saving of lumber or materials usually employed ttor this purpose.
still further object of this invention is door comprising separable sections adapted to be anchored to the door means for holding the separable sections together and guarding the i prevent the ``With thel foregoing and other objects in the invention consists in the details et construction and'in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more 'nliy. set forth and claimed.
tn describing the invention in detail, ret- Aerence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificalike characters denote corr s in the several views, and in spending part which@a Figure l illustra-tes a view in elevation of a ragment of a box car with the closure embodying the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan .view of the door in position with a 'fragment of the car in section;
Speeication of Letters llfatent. Patentgd Jun@ *7, 1.921, y .application led July 7, 1920./ Serial No. 324,424.
- Fig. 3 illustrates a. view in elevation of the the door.
' The door in the resent embodiment of the invention comprises a member 8 and a member '9 preferably constructed of lumber, each `of said members being pro-vided with vertically disposed plates such as 10 on its inner surface at the outer end. Each of said plates is secured to a member by fastenings 11 such as screws or nails, and each of the said plates and members has apertures 12 for the passage of securing devices 13 such as nails, it being the purpose of the inventors that the outer ends of the members shall be secured to the 'car trame by nails which will serve to retain them in place, it. being the purpose also of the inventors that the nails shall be Withdrawn as the door sections are forced outwardly in the center, thus making is possible to employ members Which are nailed to the frame without liability of injuring the members owing to the fact that. the plates 1() serve asjprotections to prevent splitting or other damage to the said members so that it is possible to use doors again and again when they are construct-ed in accordance with this invention.
The inner surfaces of the members 'near their inner ends are provided with plates 14 which are in the nature of Wear plates to receive fastenings such as bolts 15 and 16, -the former of which have their outer ends terminating in eyes 17 to receive the pins 18 for holding the members in assembled relation as will presently appear. The fastenings 16 retain the face -plate 19 in place on the member 9 so that the member 9 car-v ries the said face plate, and the saidface plate extends across the joint 20- between the members 8 and 9 serving to seal the joint lation, and the said face plate is therefore locked in engagement with the member 8 as fully shown in Fig. l.
An important element of this invention is found in the fact that the face plate 19 extends above the upper edges of the members 8 and 9 and forms a seat for the lowermoet strip 7 which strip rest-s on the upper surfaces of the members 8 and 9 and against the rear surface of the face plate in such a manner that the members 8 and 9 are free to swing outwardly butare braced against inward movement by reason of engagement of the face plate with the outer surface of the lowermost strip 7, and the strip 7 is prevented from vbulging in the center by reason of its Contact with the face plate.
rlhe plate 19 has a wear plate Q2 on its outer Surface which is engaged by the pins 18 so that notwithstanding there would be relative movement of the face plate with relation to the bolt having thel eye 17 the pins would not damage the said face plate.
Ne claim:
In a car door, door members separable from one another, tlie saiddoor members' having metallic fa'cings on their inner Sides at the outer ends `apertured to receive liastenings entering a door frame of a box car, a face plate adapted to lap the oint between the said door members and project thereabove to form an abut-nient for a lowermost closure member above the door, and means for securing the face plate to the door members on opposite sides of the joint between said door members. l
