To all whom it may concern:
. .Be it known that I, BLASIUS v a subject of the King of Jugo-Slavia, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to a burglar alarm, and my invention aims to provide an audible signal or alarm that may be used as a call bell; a window alarm and locking device, and a door alarm or locking device.
As a call bell, the device is detachably mounted on asupporting base which may serve as a paper weight, ash tray or article container when the bell is located on a desk or table. The call bell may also be used to imitate a telephone for theatrical purposes and may be operated by hand or foot. The device is susceptible to any desired finish and is detachably connected to its supporting base so as to be removed and used elsewhere. 7
As a window alarm and locking device an upper sash may be provided with a holder for supporting the device so that it will be actuated whenthe lower sash is raised and thus give an'alarm to indicate that the win dow is being surreptitiously entered. .The-
shape of the device contributes to the lockingof the lower sash relative to-the upper sash so that neither of the sashes may be opened farther than a prescribed distance As a door alarm or locking device it may be placed onthe floor andanchored against accidental displacement, so that it will form a wedge to prevent a' door from beingopened and at the same time be in position to be actuated by pressure, of the door on the device.
My invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a simple, durable and inexpensive construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device showing its use as a call bell; Fig. 2 is a plan of the base of the device; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a window sash, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the device as a door alarm.

The device comprises an angle bracket having a long arm 1 disposed at a right angle to a short arm 2 and these arms are braced relative to each other by angle webs 3. The longarm 1 has one end thereof terminating in a beveled member 1 having prongs 5, and the opposite end of said long arm overhangs the short arm 2 and termi nates in a lip 6 having a slot 7.
The short arm 2 has feet 8 and a slot 9, said slot cooperating with the slot 7 of the lip 6 in supporting aconventional form of call bell 10 which has a side push button 11. The call bell 10 has a strap 12 with one end thereof extending through the slot 7 of the lip 6 and retained therein by a set screw 18. The opposite end of the strap 12 hasa set screw 14 which enters the slot 9 of the short arm 2 and binds the strap against the outer face of said arm. The set screws 13 and 14 bear against the rear wall of the bell l and consequently clamp the strap 12 against the arm 2,-so that the bell cannot become accidentally displaced.
The bracket which supports the bell 10 can be placed on a support with the feet 8 supporting the short arm 2 and the prongs supporting the long arm 1, but the bell is positioned on the short arm 2 so that its push button 11 will extend downwardly and support the short arm 2 in an elevated position with the prongs 5 cooperating with the push button in supporting the device. Vith the feet 8 raised it is possible to press on the upper end of the long arm 1 and have the push button 11 actuate the bell 10. To indicate where pressure is to be brought to bear the long arm 1 may have a finger recess 15 and in the recess may be placed a name plate or finger piece 16.
When the device is to be used as a call bell on a desk, table or other support, I provide a base 17 which is preferably reo-- tangular in plan, and pressed and stamped from sheet metal finished to harmonize with the device. The base 17 has a depressed portion 18 and suitably connected to .the depressed portion 18, as at 19, is a retaining member 20 which has a resilient forked or bifurcated gripping end 21 adjacent one end of the base and this gripping end has a raised portion 22 to provide clearance for the head of the push button 11 when said push button is slipped under the gripping end of the member 20 to extend through the slot and be held on the base, as shown in Fig. 1.
To prevent accidental displacement of the device on the base 1, said base has upstanding parallel side walls 28 which are apertured to receive the transverse pin 24 that connects the side walls at the upper edges thereof and in front oi the bracket arm 2, so that when the bracket is pushed or sub jected to pressure it is impossible for the bracket to creep forward on the base. Since the push button 11 is held by the retaining member it is impossible for the device to become accidentally displaced even though the base is tilted, and it is obvious that the device and its base can be used as a paper weight on a desk or be placed convenient for use as a call bell.
As shown in Fig. 8, the device may be used as a window alarmand look, when devoid oi the base 17. An upper window sash 25 has its side rail provided with the retaining member 20 and said retaining member is positioned with its bifurcated or forked end uppermost so that the device may be suspended from the upper end oi'the retaining member by the push button 11 being held by the retaining member against the side rail of t is window sash. The long arm 1 of the bracket will therefore be supported at an acute angle relative to the sash and will constitute a wedge against which the meeting rail of the lower sash may impinge when raised. In some instances the retaining member 20 maybe placed to support the device so that it will serve as a locking wedge for the, lower sash when the lower sash is closed,
butin actual practice it is preferable to place it slightly above the lower sash so that either sash may be adjusted a predetermined distance for ventilatingpurposes. Any attempt to further open either sash would re sult in pressure being brought to bear on the bracket to actuate the push button and cause an alarm. a
As shown in Fig. 4: the device may be placed on the floor as a wedge under the edge of a door 26 and to prevent thedevice from slipping on the iloor a staple 27 may be placed in the floor as an abutment for the prongs 5 of the bracket. Should the door 26 be opened it will produce pressure on the bracket and cause an alarm.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a novel wedged shaped alarm device that may be depressed to cause an alarm, and it is through the medium of the retaining member that the device may be held to be used in more than one position; the staple 27 serving practically the same purpose as the retaining'member 20.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appendedclaims.
What I claim is 1. The combination of an alarm device having an operating push button-disposed to, solelysupport one end of said alarm device and be actuated by pressure on the device, and a retaining member under which the push button of said device engages to hold the device against accidental .movement' when pressure is brought to bear thereon.
2. The combination set forth in claim'l, wherein a base supports the retaining member with the push button of the device resting on said base.
b. A device adapted for holding a bell having a push button, comprising a bracket having a long arm and a short arm with the long arm protruding from the short arm, and bell holding means for retaining the bell in engagement with the arms of the device so that the push button of the bell may cooperate with the long arm in supporting the device with the short arm thereof above the common plane of theipush button and long arm of the device.
4:. A device of the class described comprising a bracket having a bell attached thereto provided with a push button adaptedto be actuated by pressure on said bracket, a base for supporting said bracket sothat pressure thereon will cause said bell to be actuated, said base having side walls, and a detachable pin connecting the base side walls to prevent accidental displacement of said device.
5. The combination with an alarm device having an operating push button disposed to be actuated by pressure on the device, of a traylike base adapted for supporting said device in a horizontal position, and a retaining member in said traylike base to prevent said device from slipping, said retaining member when removed being capable of supporting said device in a vertical position.
