GATE-HINGE.
Patented Maya, 1921.
Applictaion filed March '5, 1921. Serial No. 449,921.
1 0 all 10 from it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT P. BELLIOAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Natchez, in the county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in gate hinges, an object of the invention being to provide a hinge operating on substantially the same principle as the hinge disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,350,134, issued to me on August 17, 1920, and embodying certain improved features of construction, which materially add to the efficiency and durability of the hinge.
A further object is to provide a hinge which will be simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view in side elevation of a fence and gate, showing my improvedhinge in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustratin the gate in open position.
eferring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a fence or other suitable inclosure, which is provided with an opening, and 2 represents a gate mounted in the opening.
My improved hinge includes a pair of leaves 3, mounted flush upon the upper faces of the gate and fence. The leaves 3 include integral lugs 1 having registering perforations therein and also include integral depending plates, such as 5, secured to the inner faces of the gate andfence, respectively. At their adjacent edges, the plates 5 are provided with interfitting registering bearing sleeves, such as 6. A hinge pin 7 extends through the bearing sleeves and the perforations in the lugs 1 and serves to pivotally connect the leaves 3 and the plates 5.
Above the lugs 4;, upon the upper end of the hinge pin 7 a pulley 8, is mounted.
One of the leaves 3 at its outer end terminates in an upstanding lug 9 and the other leaf 3, at its outer end is integral with an outwardly extending arm, such as 10. The extremity of the arm 10 is perforated, and a plate 11, provided with a series of perforations 12, may be secured to the end of the arm 10 by a securing device such as 13, selectively passed through any one of the perforations 12 and in the perforation in the arm 10.
The plate 11 is integral with a hook l4, and a coiled contraction spring 15.: is stretched between the hook 1 1 and the lug 9.
It will be readily seen that by virtue of the above construction, when the gate is opened, the intermediate portion of the spring 15 will engage the pulley 8, as seen in Fig. 3 and will tend to restore the gate to its closed position.
Because of the series of perforations in the plate 11, it will be apparent that the plate may be readily adjusted to take up any sag in the spring 15, which may be caused by continued usage.
Although I have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent that various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invent'ion and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a fence and gate, of a hinge connecting said fence and gate and including a hinge pin, a pulley mounted on the hinge pin, a coiled spring connecting the fence and gate and engageable with the pulley upon opening of the gate.
2. The combination with a fence and gate, of a hinge connecting said fence and gate and including a hinge pin, a pulley mounted on the hinge pin, a coiled spring connecting the fence and gate and engageable with the pulley upon opening of the gate, and means associated with the fence for regulating the tension on the spring when the gate is in closed position.
3. The combination with a fence and gate, of a pair of leaves secured against the upper faces of the fence and gate and hav ing registering perforations therein, down- Wardly extending plates inte ral with the leaves and secured against the inner faces of the fence and gate, registering bearing sleeves integral With the plates, a hinge pin extending through the bearing sleeves and perforation, a pulley mounted on the upper end of the hinge pin, a contraction spring connecting the leaves and engageable With the pulley upon opening of the gate.
4-. The combination with a fence and gate,
of a pair of leaves secured against the up per faces of the fence and gate and having registering perforations therein, down Wardly extending plates integral With the leaves and secured against the inner faces of the fence and gate, registering hearing sleeves integral With the plates, a hinge pin extending through the bearing sleeves and perforation, a pulley mounted on the upper end of the hinge pin, an upstanding lug on one end of one leaf, a perforated arm integral with one end of the other leaf, a plate havin a series of perforations therein, a securing device adapted to be selectively passed through any of the perforations to secure the plate to the arm, and a coiled spring connecting the perforated plate and the lug and engageable With the pulley upon opening of the gate.
ROBERT PEARCE BELLIGAN.
