I GATECLOSER AND sUProRrEn- To all whom it mag concern i CAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Natchez, in the county. of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Gate Closer and Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
r In connection with doors-andgates, a flat adjustments and repairs to a minimum;
A further object of my invention is to construct a device of this nature which will,
be extremely economical to' manufacture and eificlent In operation.
Further objects of my invention will ap-] pear in the annexed specification and drawings, which latter representv one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which drawings,
V Figure 1 is a plan view of a gate having applied thereto my improved type of supporter and closer.
Fig. 2is a front view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the lines 33 of Fig. 1.
- In these views the reference numeral 5 indicates a fence or other suitable inclosure provided with an opening, in which a closure such as a gate 6 1s mounted in the usual manner.
Contrary to the usual construction how'-.
ever, a hinge, conveniently including a pairv of plates 7 pivotally connected together as at 8 are mounted flush upon the upper face of the fence and gate 6 serving as anadditional supportinghinge for the closure.
One of the plates has its inner end conveniently extended, and terminates in a bracket such as 9 between the arms of which a pulley 10 is rotatably mounted; the opposite end of this plate] extends at right angles to the body thereof so as to form an ex Be it known that I, Ronmrr Pia Anon BELLI I p o Specification of Letters Patent.- Patented Aug l j 192a As iration a a 2'2, 19%., Serial Nam-5,795.] 4 5 tension7 for a" fully described. I j Adjacent the outer ends of the plate 7,
hooks or other suitable securing. means 11 are provided, which serve to engage and re tain in applied position, a contraction spring 12 extending between these hooks I and bearing against the (pulley 10.
It will be appreciate that by virtueof the construction employed, that any sagging on the part of thegate will be prevented, in
view of the fact that the spring 12 will at all j other closure assuming its closed position so that slamming will be reduced to a minimum. This action is to be attributed to. the
fact that the plate 7 mounted upon the purpose hereinafter "more' upper rail of the fence 5 is extended as at 7 so that the spring 12 lies in a straight line upon the gate assuming its closed position.
Obviously numerous modifications .of structure might be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims, which read:
I claim; I I
1. In combination with a fence and gate therefor, of a closure including a pair of pivotally connected plates rigidly secured to said gate and fence respectively, and means extending between said plates for closing the gate.
2. In combination with a fence and gate therefor, of a closure including a pair of pivotally connected plates rigidly secured to said gate and fence respectively, a spring extending between and having its ends secured one to each of said plates, said spring presenting, when the gate is in closedposition, a substantially straight body.
A closer, including a pair of plates having their inner ends pivotally secured together, said plates being adapted to be rigidly attached respectively to a gate and support therefor, one of said plates being formed with a right angle extension, and means extending between the outer end of said extension and oppositeplate for closing. I
said gate.
4. A closer, including a pair of plates having their inner ends 'pivotally secured together, said plates being adapted to be rigcontractible spring extending between the outer end 01 said extensioni ia-nd :e'pposate plate for closing said gate. eleser, including a PiLiIf Qf platesadapted .to'have their inner ends secured t0 gether, one of said plates being formed with a right angle extension adjacent .its outer 'endfa bracket formed adjacent its inner end, a spring extending between and secured to the Outer end'of said "extended portlon and opposite plate, anddneans: Carried by saidbrackct' for providing a b aiing 2261f Sam closegincluding 12 pair of plates adapted to have their innerends secured to;
gether, ,OIiG'iOf :said plates being formed With a right angle extension adjacent its outer end, a bracket formed ad acent its nner end, aspring extendlng between and secured to the outer end 'cf'said extended portion andopposite plate, and a pulley carriedby 'said bracket for: roviding a "bearing fer said spring.
