Description

M. H. BENSON. POWER TRANSMITTING MEANS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-23. I920.
in such a manner whereby thereciprocatingf MADISON H. BENSON, oniiusrrn, 'rnxns.
- rowmi-rnalxisivrrrrrlie MEANS.
To all/whom it may concern: p 7 Be it known that I, MADISON H. 'BENso a citizen of the United States residing at Austin, 'in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements 1n Power-Transmlt ting Means, of which the following is 'a' specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in power transmittingimeans, and it is an object'of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which serves to convert rotary movement lnto-reclprocator'y movement and member makes one complete stroke or cycle while the rotating element makes two revolutions, thereby providing a two to one reduction without the use of gears or bolts.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved power transmitting means whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: V
Figure lis a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a power transmitting means constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention. 7 V
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section of th structure illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in front elevation and partly in section illustrating certain of the parts in a second position, and r Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating in detail the coaction between the guide shoe and ribs.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a head of the type generally employed in connection with windmills and is provided with vertically spaced bearings 1 for the reciprocating rod or plunger rod connector 2.
field defined by the v ortracks C and Cf.
7 inwardlyof the roller shoe 9 elliptical in form of The head H is also nal or bearing 3 for calmeans. The shaft 4 extends inwardly of the head H and Specification of Letters Patent. 7 31 i Application filed August 23,1920. Serial No. 405,480. V i 1 '60 the innerend portion thereof is engaged with the axial center of a vertically disposed disk or, wheel 5. Produced axial center of the disk or wheel 5 substantially semi-oval I the disk or'wheel of the major diameter of said semi-oval on the outer face' of the. disk: or wheel5 1s a cam-groove or track'C hav-i. mg a portlona'thereof at one side of the with the axial center of to one side ofjthe, center portion a. The portion a of the grooveorl; 7 track C is continued by the portions 6 i of the same radii but each of a radius less th'anthe radius of the adjacent parts of the portion a.
cam groove or track C will inwardly disposed, as at'c', so'thatsaid outer Wall will be substantially in continuity with the outer wall of the supplemental cam groove or track C. This supplemental cam groove or track C is arranged within the cam groove or track C and has a portiond substantially semi-oval and said portion d is continued by the portion a of a greater radius cent parts of the portion d. o
The lower portion of the side walls of the cam grooves or tracks C, and C at their junction are defined by the inwardly di'sposed ribs 6 extending a desired distance than the adjai .75 The central part of'the portlon b otthe has its outer side inwardly of the junction and the outer wall of the cam groove or track Cat oppoe site sides of the point cis also provided V in its lower posed ribs 6. r
- The rod or connector 2 is provided with a pin 7 extending in a direction toward the part with the inwardly disdisk or wheel 5 and mounted upon the pin 7 is a roller 8 which is adapted to ride within the outer portions of the cam grooves Engaged with the pin 8 is an elongated substantially equal to the space between the cam particula ly at their junction.
As the disk or wheel 5 rotates in one dia major diameter 7 opposed ribs 6. The shoe 9 is also of. a; 1 length in excess of the width ofieither of,
grooves or tracks C and C and re'ction', as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, V the rod' or connector 2 moves upwardly i adapted for use by reason during one and one-half revolutions of the disk or wheel 5 and downwardly upon a onehalf revolution, so that two revolutions of the disk or wheel 5 are required in order to permit the rod or connector 2 to make one complete stroke. The requisite travel of the wheels 8 within the cam groovesor tracks C and C is assured by the shoe 9.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a powertransmitting means constructed in accordance with my of the convenlence and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will 'also'be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without de- "parting from the principles and spirit there-' of and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myselt to the preclsearrangement and formation or the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: c 7
1. A device of the character described comprising a member supported for reciproa rotary member, said rotary member being provided with a main cam track,'a supplementary cam track arinvention is particularly well' ranged within the field defined by the main cam track, said tracks being in communication one with the other, a part carried by the reciprocating member and traveling within the cam tracks, and a guide shoe carried by the reciprocating member and traveling in the cam tracks, the lower portions of the side walls of the cam tracks at their junction being provided with inwardly disposed ribs, the guide shoe traveling between said ribs.
2. A device of the character described comprising a member supported for reciprocatory movement, a rotary member, said rotary member being provided with a main cam track, a supplementary cam track arranged within the field defined by the main cam track, said tracks being in communication one with the other, a part carried by the reciprocating member and traveling within the cam tracks, and a guide shoe carried by the reciprocating member and traveling in the cam tracks, the side walls of the cam tracks at their junction being provided with inwardly disposed ribs, the guide shoe traveling between said ribs.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
