The object of this invention is; to provide a machine in which the fluting of stock in the. manufacture iof 'reaniers may be accomplished by employing a series of forming dies mounted radially with reference to a central point, and adapted to be forced inwardly by rams against the stock while hot, the rams being controlled in the novel manner described below.
i A further object is to operate the dies by rams slidable over a stationary body, by the action of knuckle members to which lateral or swinging movement is imparted by an oscillating annular member in which the knuckles are socketed, or with which they are otherwise connected.
A still further object is to provide particular means for retaining the dies and stock in position.
With the foregoing and other objects in 7 :view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made in the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.-
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine; Figure 2 is a front elevation, with one side of the housing removed; Figure 3 is a vertical section; Figure 4'. is a section on line 4% of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 2; Figure 6 is a perspective View of one of the rams imparting thrust to the dies of Figure 2 under the action of knuckles 28 controlled by the oscillation of ring 22.
The base of the machine is designated 10 and has mounted thereon an upwardly extending body 12, which together with a cover 13 forms a housing for the forming dies and the elements operating them.

Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 2, and these views show that hammers 26 (of Figure 6) have interlocking slidable connection with the edge portions of the independent radial members of stationary spider S mounted in the housing.
These elements last named may be socketed in the rams and in the ring 22, each knuckle having having heads 30, 31 on opposite ends thereof. The number of 'dies corresponds with the number of flutes to be formed in the reamer, and may be greater or less than the number shown in the drawings, Retaining and guiding devices for the reamers are designate 33.
Bolted to the housing, and centrally thereof, is a bracket or frame 35, and a screw 36 is provided with a head 37, and is controlled by a wheel 38. The frame aids in retaining the forming dies in place, and the head prevents displacement of the stock when engaged by the dies.
The threads of the screw are shown as square in cross section and as being formed on two sides of the screw, leaving plane surfaces 36. These threads are proportioned to engage the segmental threads 40 on the parallel elements 41 of the frame, the screw being thus adapted for release upon a quarter turn. The end cap 44: is secured by bolts 45, and serves to guide the screw in its movement.
The stock is placed in position between the radial dies when the latter are at their outer limit of movement, and the knuckles 28 are at an angle with reference to the path of travel of the dies. The motor is then started, thereby imparting drive to ring 22, by pinion 20, and throwing knuckles 28, constituting levers, to the position of Figure 1, in which they are in alinement with the radial dies. This causes the dies to perform the fiuting operation, the stock being withdrawn when the motor has reversed and the dies are at their outer limit of movement.

In a die mechanism, a series of radially movable dies, rams engaging the dies, an oscillating ring member surrounding the rams, devices for imparting movement from the ring to said rams, said devices having heads on opposite ends, the heads being socketed in the rams and in the ring, and a spider including grooved radial elements with reference to each of which one ram has interlocking slidable connection, independently of adjacent elements of the spider.
2. In a die mechanism, a series of radial- 1y movable dies, rams engaging the dies, an oscillating ring member surrounding said rams, devices for imparting movement from the ring to said rams, and means for guiding the rams, said means including a spider comprising grooved radial arms with reference to each of which one of the rams has interlocking slidable connection, independently of adjacent arms of the spider.
3. In a device of the class described, a housing having an opening in the side thereof, radially movable dies mounted in the housing, the stock to be operated on by the dies being positioned to pass through the opening, spaced means projecting outwardly from the housing on opposite sides of the opening and having threads thereon, and a screw including segmental threads engaging the threads first named, and including flat sides between the segmental threads, said screw also including a head fol engaging the Work.
