The bolt -15 is tongue or cam 21 lying in the path of the further provided with a '15 wing (shown dotted at 22) of the key,
being readily apparent that, by turning said key one direction, .the bolt :15 will be raised,- andby turning the key in the reverse direction, the bolt-will be made to-descend. Likewise, it is apparent that raising, theboltcauses engagement of the tongue-19 with the loop 5- (when the door is closed), and lowering the bolt will cause engagement of" the tongue20 with the shackle 6. However, a neutral-position is provided,flas shown in Fig.- 3, 'in which neither-of the, tongues 19 and 20- is engaged bya loop, so that at such time the door will be unobstructed by said loop. Thus it-is obvious-that, in order to' relea se the door from said loop, the operator must be careful to turn the key only so far as will bring the bolt to the neutral position, for farther turning of the key will cause one of the tongues to engage its neighboring shackle.
As aforementioned, the member 10 is resilient/ A recess 23 is provided in the center -of the strike plate 4, having a limiting edge key, said key must first be pushed inward so as to force the member 10 back and thereby disengage the head 9 from the edge 24, allowing the same to be withdrawn.
The modified form shown in Figs. 8 and 9, together with the key of Fig. 10, is substantially similar to that just described. However, instead of the tongue 21 the bolt 15 is provided with a recess 25, within which the bit 26 of the key 27 is inserted.
The frame 1 is provided with a keyhole'27,
normally urges said pin outward, so. that,
consequently, the head 9 of the member 10 is normally urged into engagement with the edge 24 of the'strike plate when the door is closed.

I is hollowed out to provide the cylindrical tubular end 35, which is adapted tofit over the'member 28. Inside theend 35 is provided a central boss 36, separated from the wall 35 by a circular space 37, the .boss
being adapted to engage thehead 31 when thekey is inserted in the keyhole27.' Thus, it is apparent, the pin is forced to the left (Fig. 8), carrying with it the member 10,
. and thereby releasing the head of latter from the edge 24 andallowing withdrawal of the door, provided, vof course, that the key 27 is then turned in accordance directions for turning the key as previously outlined.
Thus it is apparent that I have provided a lock which is both substantial and compact in construction and easily operable by one acquainted with the proper manipulation, ,though difficult to an unauthorized person.
The illustration in Fig. 7 a door is shown at 10, provided with my lock, the wall 41 having the strike plate 4 attached thereto. In case. itis desired to dispense with the .key, a permanent handle 42 may be mounted LPivotally in said door in place of the key.
I claim: 1. A device of the class described comprising a'casingadapted to be secured to a door, a member adapted to be secured to a wall adjacent said door, shackles proj'ecting fromsaid member, a ,bolt movable parallel to the walls of said frame, recesses in said casing, said shackles beingadapted to enter said recesses, tongues on saidbolt adapted to engage said shackles within said casing, an additional recess in said casing, a recess in said member, a resilient member secured within said casing and having a head on the end thereof protruding through said additional recess and adapted to engage, said recess in said first named member. j j

A device of the class described comprising a casing adapted to be secured to a door, a member adapted to be secured to a wall adjacent said door, loops projecting from the upper and lower ends of. said member, a recess in the center of said member, recesses in the upper and lower ends of the face plate of said casing adjacent said wall and in the center thereof, a bolt movable parallel to the walls ofsaid casing having an upwardly projecting tongue and a downwardly projecting tongue adapted to engage respectively the upper and lower of said loops, a resilient member secured within said casing and having a head on the end thereof protruding through said central recess in the side of said casing, a cam extending from said bolt, akeyhOle in said casin adjacent said cam, and guides for said bolt rigid with said casing frame.
