Be it known that I GEORGE G. FLOYD, .a citizen of the United gta'tes, residing at Chlcago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames, of which f th the 'following is a specification.
. This invention relates to side frames, and particularly to the cast metal type of truck side frame. j i
In my copending application, Serial No. 344,769, iiled December 15, 1919, Patent No. 1,364,491 granted -January 4, 1921, I have set forth at great length causes and effects of compression, tension and bending stresses set up in a cast metal side frame, and which are peculiar to the cast type of side frame. -In such case I disclose a cast metal side jaws for receiving separate journal boxes.
This present application relates more specifically to a'cast metal truck side frame which has no pedestal jaws and which has no integrally formed journal boxes, but has integra ly-formed plane longitudinallly-extendlng portions at the ends'of the frame to which the standard Master Car Builders journal boxes are bolted. So far as the compression, tension and bending stresses set up in the frame, and the means for overcoming same, are concerned, this application is the same as my copending application, above Accordingly, no repetition will be made in this application of the subjectmatter claimed in said copending application, and only such points as are necessary to a complete understanding of this present invention will be considered.
In my said oopending application I have emphasized the value of transmitting forces the upper web side of a tension member to the compression member by directly connecting the upper web side of the tension member to the compression member, instead of transmitting such forces through the journal box jaws or receiving portions However, in the type of side frame disclosed in this application some mechanical obstacles are presented in securing the journal' box to the frame in a manner to lmeet all requirements.
Accordingly, the object of this invention is to provi e simple, efficient and reliablel means for securing journal boxes to cast side frames in which the web of the tension mem- Specication of Letters Patent.

This and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on e accompanying sheet of drawings, in which-` Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a` truck side frame cmbod vention;

The various novel features of my invent1on will be apparent fromy the following description and drawings and will beparticularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawing, that I have shown a truck side frame in which the tension member 10, compression member 11, columns 12 (only one of which is shown) and journal box receiving portions 13 are cast in a single piece. The tension and compression members preferably are of U section and have their Webs 14 and l5, respectively, at the upper sides of each of said members, and, for the many reasons given in my said copending application, to overcome certain undesirable tension and bending stresses, the web portions 14 and 15 also are connected directly to each other, as at point 16, which is located over the4 journal box receiving portion of the side frame at each end thereof. It will be noted in this particular type of side frame that there are no integrally jaws, nor are there journal boxes formed integrally with the side frame. Accordingly, the journal boxes must be secured to the side frame by some separate means. y
In View` of the fact that the Master Car Builders journal boxes are standard,Ihave shown such a journal box 17. These Master Car Builders journal boxes are secured to the sideframe by bolts. In this particular instance, mechanical obstacles are met in that the web 14 of the tension member extends and is directly connected to the compression member at a point adjacent one of the fastening bolts. all of the uirements and to securely fasten the journmox in each case to this type of eide frame, I have provided the web I4 ylng ,my ini In order to meet Ill@ of the tension member with an opening 18, which extends diagonally therethrough and at` a point adjacent to the point of connection between the Webs of the tension and compression members. To compensate for any weakening of the material at the opening 18, I have provided a boss 19 around the lower end of the hole. An opening 20 is providedin the web of the compression member in alinement with the opening 18, and in alinement with both of said openings 18 and 20 is a further opening 21 in the 'ournal box receiving portion whereby a olt 22 may extend through said openings through bolt lugs 23 and 24 of the journal box 17 and through a tie bar 25. This bolt 22 necessarily is relatively longer than the other journal box bolt 26. To the lower ends of these bolts-xwashers 27 and fastening nuts 28 are applied, it being understood that both bolts pass through the tie bar 25, which is rivetedto a bracket 29 formed integrally with the side frame. The bolt opening 21, and also the bolt openings 30, is formed in the ioor or web portion 31 of the journal box receiving portion 13 of the truck side frame.
By means of this arrangement all of the advantages in overcoming undesirable compression, tension and vbending stresses are obtained, and at the same time the journal boxes are secured to the side frames in a simple, eficient and reliable manner.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope ofthe following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, a truck side frame including tension and compression members and a journal box receiving portion cast in a single piece, the tension and compression members being of channel section with the cast in a single piece, the tension and compresslon members having web ortions joined directly to each other at a point over the journal box receiving portions, a journal b ox, and bolts for securing said journal box to the side frame, one of said bolts passing through openings in the webs of said tension and compression members.
3. A truck side frame including tension and compression memberscast in a single piece, the tension and compression members being of channel section with the webs thereof at the upper sides of each of said members, respectively, and being joined directly to each other at the journal box receiving portions, the webs of said tension and compression members being provided with alined openings for the reception of a journal box fastening bolt.
4.
