Application filed September 29, 1919, Serial No. 327,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM G. WILSON, a-citizen of the United States, residing at lVest New Brighton, in the county of Rich mond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sink-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cover or seal torthe outlet of a sink, and has for its principal object the provision of a seal having buoyant qualities, so as to uncover the outlet when free to float upon the water admitted to the sink, means being provided to hold the seal immovably positioned to cover the outlet when use of a large amount of water is desired.
More specifically stated, the invention makes use oi resilient means carried by the seal and constructed to frictionally engage the sink for holding the seal in position to cover the outlet, the seal being further designed to permit of free movement of the seal toward and away from said dutlet as the occasion may require.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming fication, like numerals similar parts in the wherein Figure l is a view in elevation of the seal or cover forming the subject matter of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough showing the manner of associating the seal or cover with the sink.
Fig. 8 is a view of the resilient member.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates the bottom of a sink provided with the usual outlet opening which establishes communication between the sink and the discharge pipe 11, the outlet opening having arranged therein the usual Strainer 12.
The cover or seal for the outlet opening, is indicated at 13 and may be of any desired shape or cross sectional configuration. The seal is constructed, from buoyant material, and is equipped with a gasket let which projects below the. bottom edge of the seal or cover 13 and is properly curved to effectively engage the bottom of the sink about part of this speciof reference indicate several views and Specification of Letters Patent.

reason of the fact that the seal is constructed from buoyant the seal or cov toward and away from material, it is obvious that er is susceptible of movement the outlet opening admitted to the sink, the seal the water as understood. of maintaining the seal immovably positioned within the sink to cover the outlet opening,
means dcsigne sink for this strand of resi I provide a resilient d to frictionally engage the purpose. As shown in this the invention, the consists of a single lient wire, or other suitable material which is bent to provide a loop disposed between the cover or seal 13.

Upon r g which operation the limbs passed through the openings When the parts are roper distance in the sink to 7 had to the said limbs e limb 18 is moved in the diimb 17 to disengage the hookthe latter mentioned elease of the limb 18 the latter assumes the position illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. placed over t 2 when the seal or cover is he outlet opening. In this invention, 1
position of parts, the limb 18 frictionally engages the wall of strainer through which it passes, to maintain the seal or cover 13 in the position shown. It is of course understood that the cover or seal 13 may be moved from engagement with the sink with the limb 18 in the position shown by dotted lines, by pulling upon theresilient element from the ring 16.
ing said outlet, means carried by said cover and designed to engage the sink for holding the cover immovably positioned above the outlet opening, and said means being adjustable relative to the cover for permitting free movement of the cover to float upon the water admitted to the sink as described.
7 2. A seal or cover for the outlet of a sink, comprising a buoyant body, a gasket projecting beyond the lower edge of said body, means suspended from the body and de- "signed to engage a sink to hold the cover immovably positioned above said outlet opening, and said means being designed to assume a position free, of the sink, whereby 'said cover is permitted free movement to float upon the water admitted to the sink.
3. A seal or cover for the outlet of a sink, comprising a buoyant body normally covering said outlet, means suspended from the cover and designed to engage the sink for holding the cover immovably positioned above said outlet, said means being ad ustable to assume a position free of the sink to allow the cover free movement under influence of the water admitted to the sink, and said means also serving to guide said cover in its movement.
p 4. A cover or seal for the outlet opening of a sink, comprising a buoyant body normally seated upon the sink and surround ing said outlet, a resilient element carried by the cover and having a finger engagin portion disposed above the latter, and spaced limbs depending below the cover, said limbs the opening in the "said cover adapted normally engaging the sink to hold the cover immovabl-y positioned above the outlet opening, means whereby said limb is maintained spaced from the sink to permit the cover free movement to float upon the water when the latter is admitted to the sink.
5. A cover or seal for the outlet of a sink, comprising a buoyant body normally seated upon the sink and surrounding said outlet, a resilient element carried by the cover and including spaced limbs depending therefrom, one of said limbs being movable toward and away from the other limb, and when separated therefrom engagesthe sink to hold the cover immovably positioned, means for holding said limbs associated in a manner whereby said movable-limb is held spaced from the sink to permit the cover 'free movement to float upon the water admitted to the sink.
' 6. A cover or seal for the outlet of a sink, comprising a buoyant body, a gasket surrounding said body and projecting below the lower edge thereof, a resilient element slidable through an opening in said body and having a portion disposed above the latter, and spaced limbs depending from said body and passed through openings in the strainer of the sink, one ofsaid limbs having a hooklike terminal removably engaged with the other end for holding said limbs in a position to permit free movement of the cover from the outlet opening, to float upon the water admitted to the sink, and said limbs when separated by the hook like terminal assuming positions to frictionally contact the toward and away strainer to hold the cover immovably positioned about the outlet opening.
7. A cover or seal for the outlet of a sink, having a perforated strainer, said cover comprising a buoyant body, a resilient element depending from the body and having spaced limbs slidable through openings in the strainer, said limbs normally engaging said strainer to hold the cover lmmovably positioned above the outlet opening, one of said limbs being movable with relation to the other, and means for holding said limbs positioned relatively to permit free movement of thecover toward and away from the outlet opening as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM G. WILSON.
