AM PHaro-mHosRAFHIc ca Mx (osaanwss mams) UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEe LOUIS JRGENS, OF PRESOOTT, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,928, dated April 15, 1873; application led February 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LoUIs J URGENS, of Prescott, in the countyofPierce andStatc ofWisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Door for Stove-Pipes, Joints, and Elbows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is a door which is employed in connection with a suitable opening in the stove-pipe, either elbows or joints, for the purpose of permitting thelatterto be easily cleaned withoutbeingtakendown. Its noveltyconsists mainly in constructing the door with a larger area of surface than the opening which it is designed to cover, and in forming in it a dcpression corresponding in size with the size of the openin g, the depression projecting into the opening when the door is closed for the purpose of making the union of the parts sufciently close to prevent the egress of smoke.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a sectional elevation of a pipe having my improved doors advantageously arranged, Fig. 2, aplan view; and Fig. 3, a sectional elevation, enlarged.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents a stove-pipe suitably provided with doors a c', one being arranged in the angle of the elbow and the other in the joint, either above or below the elbow. This door has a larger area than the opening which it covers, and it is provided with a depressed part, as, which corresponds in size with the size of the opening, and projects into it when the door is closed, as shown in Fig. 3, by which means the parts are so closely united that the egress of smoke 1s entirely prevented. The arrangement of openings shown in Fig. l is advantageous, because, by means of the scraper w', the pipe can be easily cleaned without taking it down.
My improved door, of course, may be applied to any pipe in which soot accumulates. The scraper may be extended to any desired length by the employment of additional lengths.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The door a, having the central depression w, in combination with a stove-pipe, as described, for the purpose set forth.
`2. The arrangement of doors shown in Fig. 1, as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 31st day of January, 1873.
LOUIS JRGENS.
