N g 11:1 51 h Q To' all whom itmay concern:
* UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE RICHARD c. IBEATTY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Be it known that I, RICHARD. C. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Chicagm'in' the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to display devices of the kind used for advertising and generally similar uses. I
The object of the invention is to provide a display device of the stated kind which will be simple and substantial in construction and low in cost. The device is intended for holding or containing an article to be displayed when combined with the device.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of the display device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 8 is a front elevation thereof, showing the article on display in position in the device; Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof, showing the article on display in position in the device; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a modified construction of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a side elevationof the device shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the device shown in Fig. 5 showing the article on display in position in the device; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 5, showing the article on display in position in the device.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4. inclusive, A. represents the article to be displayed and B represents the display device or holder to which the article to be displayed is secured in one form of the invention. In the application of the invention chosen in the illustrations the article is shown to be rectangular in form, being a box, carton, or other similar container.
The device containing the article may be supported on a showcase or other object.
Its shape and size may be chosen with a view of making the device and combined article more diflicult or hazardous to appropriate by unauthorized persons, thus rendering practicable the display of many articles which otherwise would be ineXpedient. The material for the device may be cardboard, metal or other suitable material.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Patented May24, 1921.
An important feature of the invention is that the display device B combined with the article A to be displayed from ayself supporting structure, andthat the article displayed is tilted at an angle with respect to the bottom edge of the device.
In Fig. 1 the rectangular opening C corresponds in size and outline to the middle vertical cross section of the article to be displayed. The article to be displaved in the exampled instance is rectangular and is tilted at an angle so its lowermost edge lies in a plane flush with or below the plane of the lower edge of the display device. It will be manifest that with A in place in B as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, two lines of support are-effected; one parallel to the front plane of B and the other along the left edge of A at right angles to the plane of B. Thus a stable support for the device B and the article A is formed out of the combination of A and B. The combined elements will thus rest in an inclined posi tion supported mainly along the bottom edge of A and held from overturning, in a plane parallel with the front of B by the outer point of A.
Referring to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8. In this adaptation D corresponds to B, and E corresponds to C of Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
In order to increase the rigidity of attachment of the article F to be displayed to the display device D movable members or flanges j, 72 m and a are provided to engage and secure the article F. Members is, j, m and a may be formed at the time of cutting out the opening E, by creasing or partly cutting into the surface of the mate-.
rial forming D along the lines 29, g, 1" and t, cutting through the material at lines w, o, and w, and then folding or leaving convenient for folding at a subsequent time; say at the time of attaching the article F. The members j, L, m and n are preferably of the same material and unity with the device D. The members j, is, m and n are adapted to be formed and fashioned out of material which would otherwise be removed as waste when manufacturing the adaptations shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
The location of E with respect to D may follow the plan contemplated in the ,de scription of the opening 0 in respect to B described in relation to Figs. lto 1 inelusive.
I claim as follows:
1. A display for cartons consisting ofan unstable holding element adapted to rest in an upright position upona plane support on one or more points alongits supporting edge, an opening in the holding element adapted to receive a carton laterally inclined angularly with respect to the bottom edge of the holding element; so the said edge of the holding element in combination with the lowermost edge of the inclined carton will form a stable base for the structure.
2. A display device for cartons consisting of an integral unstable holding element adapted to rest in an upright position upon a plane support on a point on its supporting edge, an opening in the holding element adapted to receive a carton laterally inclined, flange members along the edge of the opening adapted to secure the carton, the point .of support on the edge of the holding element in combination with the lowermost edge of the inclined carton forming a sta ble base for the structure. v
In witness whereof, lhereuntdsubscribr my name this 10th day of May ,A. D; 1920 I RICHARD o. l3E-ATTY.
