To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JULIUS E. HE'i'rINGER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Ch1cago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shoe heels, and has for its object providing a detachable covering for heel bottoms to be worn on the heels of shoes for various purposes. One of the purposes of the covering is to provide on the bottom of rubber heels a covering of some material such as leather, fiber, or the like, that has less friction when in contact with the floor than is the case with rubber, so that persons who are playing bowling or other similar games, and who have on shoes with rubber heels, may, by applyingto the bottom of the heel the covering, which is composed of leather or other suitable material, will be able to lay the game more satisfactorily than wit rubber heels alone. The invention in general consisting in pro viding suitable coverings or coatings for the bottoms of heels, and suitable means for attaching the same. 7

The device which I have provided in carrying out my invention comprises a base piece 1, which forms the bottom of the device, and whichhas side portions 2, preferably integral with the bottom, and adapted to extend upwardly along the sides of the heel a material distance, and an upwardly extending side portion 3 which extends around and is fixed to the side portion 2, being sewed thereto or attached thereto in any suitable manner,together with any suitable tightening means, such as the device 4, whlch is adapted to hold the upper portion 3 of the device tightly around the heel b means of a buckle 5 or in any other suitab e manner. Fixed to the side piece 3 adjacent the upper edge thereof are toothed strips 6 the teeth of which are adapted to come against the sides of the heel, when the device is on the heel, and to penetrate slightly 'into the leather of the heel, so that when the buckle is tightened the entire device will be held firmly on the heel.

The bottom piece 1 may be made of any suitable material, depending upon the purposes of the device. When it is desired to offer a surface with less friction than the 1 heel of-the shoe, I prefer to make this device of rather thick leather, such as ordinary sole leather; but it is to be understood that it may be made of any other suitable material such as fiber or even metals. The side portions 3' of the device may also be made of any suitable. material, preferably of some thin flexible material, such as thin leather, strong canvas or the like; and, hence,.are of such a nature that when removed from the heel these portions will fold inwardly into the casing formed by the base piece, and may thus be slipped into the pocket or otherwise conveniently carried; The strips 6 may be made of any suitable metal or shape,'and the teeth 7 formed in any suitable manner. I prefer for the purpose thin strips of metal such as aluminum with the teeth punched through fromthe body of the metal itself.

As modification of this device I provide the device having a framework 10 of any suitable material, such as aluminum, which extends around the lower corners of the heel, extending part way across the bottom of the heel, and part way up the side, as indicated in-Fig. 4; and extending around the corner of the heel and over the member 10 is a member 11 composed of leather, such as sole leather, or any other suitable material, and which forms the lower surface of the device, and hence the lower surface of the heel when the device is on the shoe. This differs from the device of Fig. 1 by having an opening 12 in the inner portion of the lower surface, the weight of the .wearer therefore resting entirely upon the base portion 11. Fixed to the sides of the portion 11 is a strip 13, similar to the strip 3 of the device shown in Fig. 1, and having toothed strips 14 fixed thereto in a manner similar to the device of Fig.1. It is evident from this description that the modified form of device shown in Fig. 3 may, by means of the strap buckle 15, be attached to the heel in a manner similar to the device of Fig. 1, and serves substantially the same purpose.

I claim as my invention:

1. A heel covering comprising a base adapted to be Worn under the heel of a shoe, a side piece extending upwardly from said base, said side piece being attached to said base, a second side piece extending around and above said first mentioned side piece and being attached thereto, means fixed to the inner surface of said second side piece to prevent slipping of said second side piece on the heel, and means for tightening said second side piece around said heel.

2. A heel covering comprising a base adapted to be Worn under the heel, a side piece extending upwardly from said base, said side piece being attached to said base, a second side piece extending around and above said first mentioned side piece and being'attached thereto, and means for tightening said second side piece around said heel, and toothed strips fixed to the inner side of said second side piece With the teeth thereof projecting inwardly.

3. A heel covering comprising a base adapted to be WOIIl under the heel, a side piece extending upwardly from said base, said side piece being attached to said base, a second side piece extending around and above said first mentioned side piece and being attached thereto, means for tightening said second side piece around said heel, and holding strips fixed to the inner side of said second side piece.

4. A heel covering comprising a base adapted to be Worn under the heel, a side piece extendin upwardly a relatively short distance from said base, said side piece being attached to said base, a second side piece extending around and a material distance above said first mentioned side piece and being attached thereto, and means for tightening said second side piece around said heel, said second side piece being made of thin flexible material, whereby said covering is collapsible.
