Be it known that I, DE MOT DONEL-AN a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 'fiondon, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Remembrancers, of =which1the following is .a specification.
is in position on-thepersomjfor example :in
the pocket, towrest on such article-in such manner that the gstrikergis inoperative, but when the ,article is, removed for-use,- said device isadapted to depend from the person by a thread, cord, or the like by which vit ,is
attached to the person, :so that the striker is rendered operative to strikeethe bell or the like on movement of the person, should the device not be replaced after use.
In the drawings, 7
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of one form of the invention adapted to be placed an the upper end or cap of a fountain pen.
Fig. 2 being an elevation showing the device in position on the cap of a fountain en. p Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of another form adapted to be placed on the lower end of a pen.
Fig. 4: showing this form in position on a pen.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a third form adapted to actas a cap for a pen container the device being shorwn'in position on the container which has a pen inside it.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a further form applied to a spectacle case.
Fig. 7 is a sectional View of the same.
In carrying out the invention according to one form for example in its application to the protection against loss, of a fountain pen, a gong or bell 1, of substantially tubular form, open at one end, is provided with a striker 2 consisting of a ball or bead of Specifieation of Lettersi'atent. "Pate t d M 17 192 "app n ifi lunar, 2p. is xiahnp-ksaaaoi.
metal secured to one end of a short fiexible member such as for example a thread 3, the otherend of which is connected to the bell, for nstance ;by knots 5, so-that the striker 1n the free ,position depends from the top of the hell .or the like, so as to 'be capable ofstriking the :bell or the like. The bell, is provlde'd with a comparatively long securing ,thread .6 which vmay .be ,a continuation of the thread .3, by which ,the device is adapted to be secured to the ;dress of the person .forexample by a suitable clip 7vof known iform.
Whemthe ,fountain pen is not required for use, and is inthecarrying positionon the person, the bell 1 is placed over the closing cap :8 of :the pen ' 9; .The bell 1 may be slipped .over :the coveror cap 8 .of thexpen 9 and have a clip 10' to replace the pocket clip commonly used to hold apen in .the pocket. Whenwthe pen 9 is required for use the'ibell 1 is removed from .the cap 8, and permitted todepend from the person byitssupporting string or cord :,6, the pen 9 being then removed fromits carryinggpos sition, and used as required. Should the person inadvertently omit to :replace the pen in its carrying position after use, the Striker 2 on movement of .the person away from {the position in which-(the pen has been used, will strike the bell 1 or the like continuously as the movement is continued, thus drawing the attention of the person to the omission.
In order to render the bell resilient it is provided with slits 10', I have found by experiment that these also improve theresonance of the bell. The bell 1 may be applied to the lower end of a pen as indicated in Fig. 4:. In order to permit of a bell 1 of comparatively larger diameter than the pen 9 being used in this way the bell is provided with slight projections 11.
It is to be understood that the invention, although described above in its application to the protection against loss of a fountain pen, is in no way limited to such application, this being merely by way of example, for it'will be readily appreciated that the device may be used in connection with the many other articles usually carried on the person, for example, spectacles or pince-nez, pocket knives, pencils, and the like. Such an application is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 where the spectacle case 12 is provided with two semi-cylindrical members 13 one being carried by the case 12 and the other by the lid 14:. When the case is closed the two members 13 come together and are locked together by the bell 1 being placed over them so that the person carrying the case cannot open it without removing the bell Should he forget his case and move the bell 1 Which is suspended from his person by the thread 6, will ring and remind him of his omission.
I claim:
1. A remembrancer comprising in combi nation a bell having a striker freely suspended within said bell and flexible means for suspending said bell from the person, and means, on the article of which the person is to be reminded, adapted to receive said bell and to hold said striker in-active, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth. n
2. A remembrancer for a fountain pen comprising a bell adapted to fit on said pen, said bell having a'striker'suspended by a flexible member within said bell, and a flexi- 1 ble member attached to said bell for sus- I ticle, a movable member within the cap and adapted to form an alarm 1n vconnection with the cap, said member being held inoperativefor alarm purposes when the cap is on the article, and means for connecting the cap to the person.
5. The combination of an article of a caplike element arranged for removable connection to the article, a sounding element within the cap and adapted to be held inoperative when the cap is on the article, and a connection to attach said cap to the person.
6. A combination with an article of a remembrancer comprising a bell having a striker suspended within it, the bell being adapted for removable connection with the article to hold the striker inoperative, and means for suspending the bell from the person.
7. The combination with an article of a remembrancer comprising an alarm comprising a bell in the form of a cap for the article, and a striker suspended within the cap, the striker being held inoperative with respect to the bell when the latter is in position on the article, and a flexible connecting means extending from the bell.
8. The combination withan article, of a remembrancer comprising an alarm-including a bell inthe form of a cap for the article, said bell being longitudinally slitted to render it resilient for cooperation with the article and improve its resonance, a striker suspended within the cap, the striker being held inoperative with respect to the bell when the latter isin position on the article, and a flexible connector extending from the bell.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
DERMOT DONELAN.
