To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, RALPH RosE, a citizen of the United States, and NIoHoLAs F. CIMAGLIA, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Splicing-Ear for Overhead Trolley-l/Vires, of which the following is a specification.
, The splice ears in use at the present time are unsatisfactory, as the edges which come in contact with the riding wheel on the trolley pole wear out very readily, and consequently require frequent renewals. I The object of this invention is to provide a splice ear with a removable wearing edge which can be replaced when worn out without affecting the former. Another object of this invention is to provide a device which can'be used either as a splicing ear or as a supporting member at the placeswherethe trolley wire is held by the cross wires between the two poles placed along the road at frequent intervals. t
We obtain this object by means of the device fully described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
One of the many features and advantages of this device is that the riding trolley wheel passes over a convex surface on the under side of the guide piece instead of wearing against the edges of the ear, encircling the wire, which is the case in existing devices. Another feature of our device is that the same ear can be used for either splicing or supporting the trolley wire and also that it can be used for several thicknesses of'wire. An additional feature, is that it can alsobe used to connect the feed wire whenever it is of our device is that the ear can be connected to the supporting'cross wire at the support-' ing poles without the use of screws, by
merely engaging it with the supporting piece, which is in turn held by the cross wires. I

The protecting member 10, preferably made of a malleable alloy of copper, and U-shaped as shown in Fig. 6, and otherwise'shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 18, is provided with the.
bolt holes '11, 12 and 13 in itssides and is adapted to =fit over themember 1. The member 10 is fixed to the ear 1 by means of the bolts or screws'le, 15 and 16. The-bolt 15 passes through the slottedrhole'3 in the membe'r1. When the bolts 14, 15am 16 are tightened, the sides ofthemember 10 are brought to bear against the inclinedsurfaces 4' of the'member 1 and'therebythe member :1 V
I is very firmly held against the member 1 as is clearly shown in Fig. 8 and in plan in Fig. 9. V In order to provide a firm grip on the ends of the wires ,7 and 8, the member 10 is provided at the sides near the bottom with the projecting teeth 17 which are adapted to grip the wire and thereby prevent the latter from pulling out. In order to have the inner surface of the member 10 fit snugly against the wire, the slotted hole 8 in the meniberil is provided, which permits the pressing of theme-mber 10 against the wire before the bolts 14, 15 and 16 are tightened. To provide smooth riding for the trolley wheel over theedge of the member 10, the thickness of the bottom of the U portion is reduced near the ends as is shown in Figs. 6, 15 and 16 so that its surface slopes gradually towardthe center where it is thicker and is then reduced in thickness gradually as it approaches the other end. Similarly the width of the member 10 is less at the ends than at the center, so that the riding trolley and 8 and thereby prevent the bottom of Wheel can get over it easily.

The bolt 21 having the two projecting pins 22 and 23 at the end thereof is fixed within the interior of the supporting member 19 and is insulated therefrom by means of the insulating material 24. The member 1 is provided with a cylindrical hole 25 at the center thereof adapted to receive the bolt 21 and a slot 27 into which the pins 22 and 23 projecting from the bolt 21 are adapted to enter. At the bottom of said slot 27 is a cylindrical chamber 26 which is concentric with the hole 25 whereby the pin 21 can be rotated within the hole 25, the pins 22 and 23 engaging with the top and bottom of said chamber 26.
It will now be evident that the device is supported in the following manner: The member 19 is held in place by means of the cable 20 suspended between the two poles in the roadway, with the bolt 21 projecting from the under side thereof. The ear 1 is attached in position by bringing'the 11016251 overthe bolt 21, the pins 22 and 23 meanwhile entering the slot 27 until they get within thechamber 26, after which the bear against the sides of said splicing member.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a splicing member, having its sides bulged near the bottom, adapted to have the ends of trolley wires attached thereto, and a U shaped guide piece removably attached to said splicing member adapted to fit over the ends of the trolley wires and to have its sides bear against the bulging sides of said splicing member.
3. In a device of'the character described, the combination of a splicing member, having bulged sides, adapted to have the ends of the trolley wire attached thereto, and a- U shaped guidepiece removably attachedto said splicing member, adapted to fit over the ends of the trolley wire and to have its sides bear. against the bulging sides of said splicing member, the under side of said guide piece being shaped to fit within the groove of the traveling trolley wheel.
4. In a device of the character described, the combinationof a wire supporting member, having bulging sides, and a U shaped guide piece vertically adjustable and removably attachable to said supporting member, adapted to cover the trolley wire attached to said suplporting member and adapted to have its sites bear against the bulgingsides of said supporting member.
5. In a device of the character described, thecombination of a splicingmember having a groove at the under side thereof-and openings through the body thereof, adapted to have the ends of trolley wires pass there through, the sides of said splicing member being bulged near the bottom, and a U shaped guide piece removably attached to guide piece vertically adjustable and 'removably attachable to said supporting member,
adapted to cover the trolley Wire attached to said supporting member, and adapted to have its sides bear against the bulging sides of said supporting. member.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a splicing member having a groove at the under side thereof, openings through the body thereof, and its sides bulged near the bottom, adapted to have the ends of the trolley Wire pass therethrough, a U shaped guide pieceremovably attachable to said splicing member, having a roughened interior surface, adapted to fit over the ends of the Wire and to hold them in position.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a splicing member having a cross section tapering from a point near the bottom toward the center, adapted to have the ends of the trolley Wire attached thereto, and a U-shaped guide piece removably attached to said splicing member, adapted to fit over the ends of the trolley Wire and to have its sides bear against the tapering sides of said splicing member.
