1 is aV rope which passes from mechanism in a machinery house a around suitable sheaves and around a back sheave 2 secured to a back post 3 at the opposite side ofthe piling floor 4 to that of the machinery building andhopper 5. In the present instance, I have illustrated in diagram the means for discharging coal from a car and the means for elevating the coal to a bunker, the piling floor being so located that coal may be scraped from the pile of coal into the hopvper 5, or can be discharged from a chute 6 connected to an elevator 7 onto the pile, the
scraper being arranged so as to distribute of handling coal and like material by means of a drag scraper. Y
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, 10 isa scraper made of sheet metal having a body portion- 11 curved at the upper end 12 andl having side Vportions 13. The scraper-is open at the bottom and at the front and has a series of teeth 14 extending below the bottom so as to penetrate the body of coal over which it passes. Attached at each side to the lower end of the scraper are plates 15 connected to the side portions by braces 16. 17 are pivot pins for a bail 18, the two members of the bail being angular and extending to a point in front of the scraper. This bail is pivoted to a shackle 19 by a vertical pin 2OV and pivotally connected to the shackle are links 21 to which the rope clamp 22 is-pivotedso-that the rope clamp is free to swing according to the tension on the rope. The shackle 19 is connected by a chain 23 to another rope clampv 24 which, in turn, is connected by two chains 25 to eyes 26 at the rear of the scraper. The rope 1 passes over the scraper and is attached to the clamps 22 and 24, as shown, there being sufficient slack in the rope between the two clamps to allow the clamp 24 to assume the position shown in Fig. 4, when the scraper is returning to engage another load. By this construction the scraper can be clamped to kthe rope at any point desired.
I have illustrated the clamp 22 in detail in Figs. 5 and 6, the clamp 24 being a duplicate of the clamp 22. The clamp 22 consists of a U-shaped plate 30 having side members 27 which are hooked at their outer ends 32. A fixed member 31 is mounted on a bolt 28 within the U-shaped plate. 35 is the movable member adapted to slide on the U- shaped plate; a clamp screw 34 passes through a nut 33 swiveled in the hooked end 32 of the plate and bears upon the movable member. -T he fixed member 31 of the clamp is V-shaped and the movable member 35 is shaped to correspond to the fixed member so that, when the screw is applied, the rope is clamped firmly between the two members and kinked so as to hold it rigidly in position. 4The bolt 28 is the pivot bolt by which the clamp is attached to the links 21.
By the above construction, it will be seen that a single rope can be used and the scraper pile.

The operation is as ollows:-l/Vhen the scraper is attached to the ropes, as shown in Fig. 42, and power is applied, the rope drags the scraper forward and the coal, or other material will be collectedin front of the scraper as it moves forward and will automatically liow from the scraper when the end ofthe pile is reached, or whenthe forward movement ofthe scraper is discontinued the coal is left at this point on the Then the mechanism is reversed and the scraper is drawn back over the pile, the scraper falling back, as in Fig. l, so that it will ride over the surface of the coal the same as a sled. Then, -when it hasvreached the point desired, the mechanism is again reversed and the scraper is moved forward, the teeth in the scraper engaging the coal and the first movement will be to elevate the scraper to the position illustrated in Fig. 2, when it will collect material by pushing the material forward. By pivoting the bail, as shown, the scraper is free to assume the two positions mentioned above.

but is essential where two ropes are used, one connected to the bail and the other to the rear of the scraper.
I claim 1. The combination in a scraper for handling granular material, of a body portion open at the front and at the bottom; a bail plvoted to the body. portion at or near the bottom and extending in front of the scraper; and a rope connected to the bail and to the rear of the scraper so that the bail remains in substantially a horizontal position when the body portion is in a vertical or a horizontal position.
2. The combination of a scraper for handling granular material consisting of a body portion curved at its upperedge and having side members; a bail pivotally connected to the lower end of the side members; clamps connected to the bail vand to the body portion at the back of the scraper; and a rope attached to the bail by the clamps.
3. The combination of a scraper consisting of a body portion curved at the upper edge; two side members; plates at the lower end of each side member; a bail pivotally connected to the plates; a shackle pivotally connected to the bail; a rope clamp attached to the shackle; a second rope clamp; a chain connecting the second rope clamp with the rear of the scraper; and a rope extending through both clamps and slack between the clamps.
