IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.l137,752, dated April 15,1873 application filed March 24, 1ere.

To, all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN ANDREws, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new andImproved Butter-Package, of which the f'ollowing is a description:

Figure l is a side view of a case of packages having a section of the case broken away in order to show the packages therein. Fig. 2 is a top view, showing the packages in the case. Fig. 3 is a detached view of a package. Fig. 4 is a view of Fig. 3 spread out. Fig. 5 is a detached section. y

The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a package for the preservation, sale, and transportation of butter, and Which package is made in the manner as follows:

The top and bottom and also two sides of a package referred to consist of one strip of thin board. Such a strip is shown in Fig. 4, of which A B represent the top and bottom, and the narrower sections C D two supplementary sides. Said board is out transversely partially through, as indicated by the lines a, which admits of its being easily turned at right angle, as shown in Fig. 5. A top view of Fig. 5 is shown in Fig. 2, reduced in size for convenience. I A similarstrip of board, but less in Width, is cut, as was the strip above referred to, and bent, as shown in Fig. 3, to form the sides and height of the package, and which sides are shown at E, Fig. l. 1

It will be seen in Fig. 3 that the ends of the strip lap upon eachother, forming a double side for the convenience of being tacked together. To the sides of the package when thus formed the Vbottoni and top referred to are then applied by inserting the narrow end D of the strip, Fig. 4, inside the side F of the square, Fig. 3, said narrow end being equal in height to the sidesand against which it lies, as indicated by the dotted lines a, and which is tacked thereto for security. llhe square part B of Fig. 4 will then form the bottom of the square, as indicated by the dotted lines b. The narrow part O of Fig. 4 is then turned up against the outside of the side H of the square, and thesquare part A of the strip,indicated by the dotted lines c, is then turned back over onto the top of the square thereof, forming a cover for the sides, Fig. 3, as shown in Fig. 2, thus completingthe package.

The package above described has a holding capacity of one pound of butter, and which is put therein in a closepacked manner. To this end the package is placed in a strong frame to prevent it from spreading while the butter is being packed therein, which on being done the top A is then turned down upon it, and

the package of butter removed and stowed with others in a tight case, I, in the order as shown in Figs. l and 2, which, when full, is then charged with brine. The case is then sealed up, and is now ready for shipping.
