WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1921.
Application filed June 16, 1920. Serial No. 389,413.
T 0 all whom it may con ern:
Be it known that I, LEON GsoHwiND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines which while particularly useful and desirable for washing clothes or garments, may be used for washing dishes, or in fact, for any purpose where the machine would operate in a practical and efficient manner.
One object of my invention is the provision of a structure capable of use in combination or connection with basins or sinks used in residences or apartments and which while permitting its use as a dish or clothes washing machine will not'interfere with the usual functions of the basin or sink.
Another object of my invention is the provisions of a mechanism capable of ready and inexpensive application to sinks or basins in general use, and which is capable of operation by hand or by suitable power, to quickly cleanse the garments or other objects.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a mechanism of the character and for the purposes stated which will be of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, which will be small and compact to occupy a small space and which will prove practical and eflicient in every respect.
To attain the object and such others as inhere to an invention of this character, the improvements consist in certain features of construction and combination of parts as shown, described and particularly defined by the claims, it being understood that any changes may be made in the mechanism which fall within the scope of the claims.
In order that the construction in detail and the operation of my mechanism may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated I have shown in the accompanying drawings a washing machine mechanism embodying my improvements, and in said drawing:
Figure 1 represents a front view of a sink structure provided with my improvements, more particularly ,to show its general relation and exterior appearance.
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged sectional view of the depending receptacle and the wash ing machine element and the driving mechanism unlt whlch comprise my invention.
Fig. 3 represents a view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 represents a sectional view taken on the l1ne 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring by numeral tothe drawings in which simllar numerals of reference are used to denote the same part in all the views:
The numeral 1 designates the sink formed wlth the back wall 2, the supporting legs 3, the drain board 4 and having the usual hot and cold spigots 5, the sink having formed lntegral therewith and depending therefrom the receptacle 6, which forms a most important part of my invention.
The receptacle is provided with a discharge or drain portion 7, and a central shaft opening 8, provided with a threaded nipple 9, such nipple receiving the upper end of the operating shaft 10, which is formed with a key or squared end 11, and whose lower end is mounted at 12, in the yoke shaped support or hanger 13, said vertlcal shaft 10, carrying a horizontal beveled gear 13', meshing with the beveled gear 14, on the stub shaft 15, bearing in said hanger and carry1ng at its other end the large gear 16, m mesh with the motor driven gear 17, operated from the motor 18, of any desired type, or if desired hand power may be used.
From this construction it will be observed that the vertical shaft which bears in the hanger and receptacle is given a revolution from the motor and connections and upon the upper keyed end of said shaft is mounted a gear wheel 19, which is in mesh with a larger gear wheel 20, such gear wheel being.
supported on a post 21, secured in a box or casing 22, which casing is secured in the circular disk 23, which is provided with legs 24:, supporting it upon the bottom of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2, such plate being rendered water-tight by suitable flanges 25, upon the plate, while said plate is also provided with a vertical sleeve 26, in which fits the agitator carrying shaft 27, having the agitator 28, of any desired construction, the agitator shaft carrying a small gear wheel 29, in mesh with the rack bar 30, guided by the lug 31, said rack bar being connected at one end by means of the link 32, with the large gear wheel 20, the rotation of said gear wheel imparting to the rack a reciprocating movement which movement through its mesh With the small gear wheel imparts to the agitator shaft and the agitator thereof a reciprocating action which is desirable and necessary in the operation, of washing clothes or garments.
It will thus be seen that the mechanism constitutes a receptacle formed with the sink, a washing machine element disposed in said receptacle of the sink and capable of application and removal therefrom and a driving mechanism or unit for operating the washing machine element and as the operation of the improvement will be readily understood fromthe drawings taken in connection with the description that further explanation thereof is deemed unnecessary.
It will be apparent that a mechanism con structed in accordance with and embodying my invention will prove highly useful and desirable in residences and apartments owing to the small amount of space it occupies; also that hand or motor power may be used to operate the mechanism and that generally in all important respects the invention possesses the requirements to provide a useful, desirable and practical invention.
I claim:
1. An actuating means for a stirrer, consisting of a receptacle, a rotary element therein and a driving mechanism or unit for operating said agitating element, said actuating means fitting the receptacle above the bottom thereof and having a water tight connection therewith.
fitting the receptacle above the bottom there-' of and having a water tight connection therewith.
3. An actuating means for a stirrer, consisting of a receptacle, an agitating element mounted within said receptacle, and consisting of a supporting unit, an agitator shaft mounted therein and carrying an agitator, a gear wheel on said shaft, a driving gear operating said gear on the shaft, a smaller gear on the agitator shaft, a rack for reciprocating said gear, a connection between the driving gear and rack, means for operating said driving gear consisting of a vertical shaft, a hanger depending from the receptacle and supporting said shaft, a gear wheel on said shaft, and gearing for operating said gear to drive said shaft, and a housing for the gears within the receptacle, said actuating means fitting the receptacle above the bottom thereof and having a Water tight connection therewith.
4. An actuating means for a stirrer, consisting of a sink, a receptacle depending therefrom, an agitating element mounted within said receptacle and capable of application and removal therefrom, and a driving mechanism adapted to engage or disengage the agitating element, and embodying a reciprocatory rack, said actuating means fitting the receptacle above the bottom thereof and having a water tight connection therewith.
5. An actuating means for a stirrer, consisting of a sink, a receptacle depending therefrom, a motor-driven shaft, a plate in the receptacle, a housing depending from the late a chain of ears in said housin and embodying a reciprocatory rack, and a shaft extending into said receptacle and actuated LEON GSGHWIND.
