To (zZZ'whomz't may comm; j
Be it known that LWILILIAM C. 'SI-IELLY; a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Norfolk, in'thecounty of Norfolk and State ofVirginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inGarment-Hangers,
v of whichthe following isaspecification.
My inventionrelates to garment hangers. The object of" the invention is j toprovide an adjustable form fitting hanger for full dress suits, evening dresses, military-uniforms and the like of various sizes which willpreserve the shape thereof and also constructed out of material-that will preat3inFig.1." I The two parts are connected by axside wise movement so that the inclavedor clove- I tail joint 4 may interlock thereby prevent- 5O vent moths from injuring. the garments while they are hanging, thereupon.
Further objects and advantagesfwill be I more fully described herein and specifically pointed out in the annexed claims recourse being had to the accompanyingdrawing forming a part of this specification. in which j I Figure 1 is an elevation oftmy improved garment hanger;
' Fig. '2 is a crosssection taken on the line 12 in Fig. 1..
Fig. 3 is a part transverse section taken on the line 8- 1 in Fig. 2.
-- Fig. 4 is a view lookingat the broad end of one of the adjustableform fitting shoulder blocks or elements.
r "Fig. 5 is longitudinal's ection"sofa block taken on the line 56 in Fig 7. I j the adj ustable Fig. 6 is a view of one o the narform fitting blocks looking toward row end thereof. I l j c Fig. 7 is a planview of one'of the blocks,
and Fig. 8 is a cross section taken on the line 1-2 in Fig. 1 showing a; spring retaining plate appliedthereto.
, I In the drawings like reference numerals indicate slmi-lar parts in all views The hanger consists of twoparts 1 and 2 having the joint thereof at thecenter as ing the two members'from pulling apart which is further prevented' by 'the screw of i the hook 4 piercing the dovetail lock joint by which they are held firmly together.
The material of which the parts 1 and-2:
are constructed is red cedar wood which acts as a mothpreventat ve more partlcu- Specification of Letters Patent.

larly where theclothes upon the hanger are placed in a closet or display case-instores,
- The device assumes the form of an inverted flattened V-shape with theends of "the two members 1 and QbentatapproXimately right angles thereto, as at 5, and

in which-the vertical recesses} or pockets 6' are cut. 1
' The recesses or pockets are, of anysuit able lengthso as to afiordi space for' 'the movement of the ends of the! hereinafter-'1 describedclamprods, being a hole at the bottom of themefnibers .5, "by which the pockets are startedby' boring aholei fromi which the recesses are cut by a chigelfi clamping rods 9 and 10 the ends of which are confined for movement in the recesses The clamping lrodsare arranged as'in- Fig.1 and in detail in Figs; 2,3 and 8 and. are normally close together, as shown, with" a coil spring 11 upon the upper ends of the" rod 9 and exerts a pressure upon the loweri rod 10.,both, however, are under the in fluence of the springs; The rods are usedfor hanging trousers or other garmentsyand areoperated by lifting the upperirod 9, insertingthe same on the lower rod and then releasing the r0d9 1 which clamps andholds the apparel firmly.
To prevent displacement of. the springs V,
' 11,1 apply small plates 12,.by means of the screw or screws l3fto the inner-edges of the vertical parts '5 of the ha'ngermembers 1 and 2, a little belowthe tops of the springs, as
12 being concave, as at 14:, to receive the up- .per rod- 9 when it isrraised, as indicated by j dotted lines inFigs'I and 3. V In large size garments, the width of the so as to be at the shoulders and the same is in Figs. 3 and 8, the lower ends of the plates I V hanger may be insuflicient toreach the sleeves liable to get Out/ 10f shape when hung thereupon and to: obviatethis difiiculty, employ i sliding adjustable blocks 15, which may be positioned at convenient points on the hanger andat each side of the hook jto conform to anysize of garment. The blockshave a tapered and are provided with a channel or 13101316 form in plan having a sloping under portion, ('at the top of the groove or slot), so that: theymaybe V 7 adapted to conform to the curve of the members 1 and 2 and be arrangedas desired thereupon, as shown in Fig. 1. 7
The adjustable blocks are provided Witha perforation or hole' 17 in their top portions through to the slot' l6 and by the use of suit- 7 able pins passing :therethrough and into the perforationsor holes 18 in the parts land 2, the blocks are held in any position upon the upper, part of the hanger members. j In'thismanner the form of the garment is preservedwhen displayed in stores or else- 7 Where.
It istherefore seen that the Width oi'the hanger maybe increasedby the blocksand the, comparatively vnarrow shape of the hanger frame is widened at the'shoulders of v the, garment here it-is necessary forthemi to be placed in order to keep shape. 1 r 5 f v I claim:-
