, the county of Page and State of Iowa, have Y invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is. a specification.

This invention relates to skirt markers and particularly to a device ntended for holding chalkor other marking or indicatlng elements with relation to which a skirt or garment may be moved so that the height ofthe skirt or garment from the floor may be determined by the markings.

An object of this invention is to produce a base having an upstanding arm or standard provided with novel means whereby the marking element may be adj ustably held and whereby the marking element may be quite rigidly supported in difierent pos1- tions of adjustment, the said device being of such construction as to permit its manipulation to effect the said adjustment.

A still further object of this invention is to produce a base having a receptacle for articles such as pins and having novel means for detachably holding the standard so that the said-standard may be removed and the whole device transported in compact condition.

Furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide a sectional standard of novel means whereby the several sections are held in assembled relation to one another; the said invention furthermore contemplating the provision of a novel marker holder element which is yieldingly held in different positions of adjustment on the standard.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a sectional View of the base with the standard partly in section and the marker holder applied thereto;

The standard comprises a series of sec- 'tions such as 9 and 10, each section having at its lower end a tongue such as 11 which The sections of the standard are, as stated,

V-shaped and the edges have recesses or seats 13 between the ears 12, the recesses in the two edges being in alinement so that they will support the marker holder, as will presently appear.v

The devices, so far as the base and the standard are concerned, can be stamped from sheet metal, and therefore, it can be inexpensively produced whereas when they are assembled they would be sufficiently rigid to perform the functions intended.

The marker holder in the present embodiment of the invention comprises a clip or clamp comprising two jaws 14: and 15 which hold the marker 16, which may be in the nature of the ordinary cloth marking chalk, and the said clip is carried by an arm 17 which is a part of the yieldable standard engaging device for holding the marker at different positions of adjustment, it being shown that the said arm is intended to lie in the recesses of the standard, and the said arm is held in its different positions of adjustment by a finger 18 which is bent to the contour of the outer surface of the standard, that is to say, the finger is angular in plan so that it lies against the outer surface of the standard and holds the arm 17 in the recesses so that it cannot be displaced except by moving the arm with relation to the finger and the standard. The jaws 4: and 5 are shown in Fig. 1 as being integral and they are formed by bending a plate of metal to form a loop which loop embraces the arm 17, and the looped portion of the plate may be secured to the arm in any appropriate manner as by soldering. The arm and finger are preferably integral and are formed of spring metal or material with a loop or curved portion 19 at their junction, the said loop constituting a spring by which the parts are held in assembled relation to the standard. The finger is preferably formed by doubling the material on itself to form a loop 20 which embraces the arm and when pressure is exerted on the end 21 of the finger and the arm 17 is pulled toward the said end, the space between the arm and the finger where they embrace the standard, is enlarged to a degree to eifect a clearance of the arm from the recesses so that the arm may be moved at difierent positions of adjustment and then released whereby the spring 19 causes the seating of the arm again in its newly placed position.

The ears 12 may be formed at the time the recesses are produced, and all that is required to constitute an anchorage for the succeeding standard 17 is to bend the ears inwardly to a degree which will cause them to frictionally engage the inner surface of the tongue of the said succeeding section.

We claim;

In a garment marker, a base having a socket, a sectional standard secured thereto, each of the said sections having a tongue the lowermost of which fits in the socket of the base, the said sections having ears and recesses therebetween, the said ears at the upper end of the bottom section being inwardly bent to form tongue engaging elements for holding the tongue of the section thereabove, and a marker holder comprising an arm adapted to engage the edges of the standard and enter the recesses thereof and having means for removably holding the arm in the said recesses.
