HERMAN L. GREVE, OIEVNEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL MAILNG TUBE AND WRAPPER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
' MAILING-WRAPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
T0 all lcham t may concern.' Be it known that I, HERMAN L. GREVE, citizen of the United States, and' resident of the city of New York,l in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Wrappers, of which the fol-lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to mailing wrappers and particularly to that class relating to the mailing of books and packages of similar shape. e
The object ofmy invention is to provide a wrapper that is sufliciently stif and strong to thoroughly protect the article wrapped from being injured in passing through the mail and further, a construction, the parts of which can be stamped from a sheet .of flexible paper or other suitable material and all connected together ready to wrap a package but which 'can be delivered to the user in bundles containing` the wrappers in v flat or knock-down form. A further object is to provide a wrapper in which the two body portions are h eld together in relatively adjustable relation by means that may be readily disconnected to permit replacement of either body portion that may be damaged by a new part. A further object is to provide means for protecting thev ends ofl the book or other package, as well as the sides and end portions thereof and to hold said end protecting portions to the body portion in such -manner as to permit it to pivot or turn relative to the body portion to which it is attached.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification;
Figure l is a plan view of the inner side e ready for the user.
Fig. 6 is an end view of the assembled parts as illustrated in Fig. 5.
. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a wrapper with a booktherein, which illustrates the wrapper as it appears when the body 'portions are covered to permit the portions to Patented May 3, v1921. Application -led July-9, 1919. Seriall No. 309,744.
bend easily and conform tothe shape of' l the book in the act of wrapping the same. Fig. 8 is a view of the opposite side of the wrapper with the book inclosed and disclosing the means for fastening the wrapper in position on the Vbook. 'j e Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the wrapperas it appears when the body portion not scored; and l Fig. 10 the opposite side to'that disclosed in Fig. 9 with the book fully inclosed and package fastened ready for mailing.
A, indicates onebody portion, A the scoring and A2 theouter edge portions of the wrapper, and B the other body portion to which is attached thev stripV C which is held thereto by the fastening means D comprising a loosely fitting rivet which permits the strip C to turn relative -to the body portions A and B to the position indicated by the dotted lines E. ln the portion` B are two parallel slots F-,F respectively through which the interlocking ends Crrespectively are passed andl locked together as shown at H, thus forming a band which slidingly engages the guide I and thus holds the body portions A and B together in adjustable relation. The edges A2 are turned to form a bead to stien the ed e and thus j prevent the edge portion 4from eing easily torn and at thev same time move perfectly to protect the ends of the book when wrapped, since they extend beyondthe end of the book when the wrapper is in posin j tion as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8.
The book is wrapped as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the free ends of the strip C` being folded over the endsof the book as shown after the body portions have been button K is fastened to the outer side of the portion A and the cord attachedthereto is passed around the wrapper as shown and fastened to the button in the usual manner adjusted to the length of the book J.v The I thus holding all the parts securely together. 1
lt is obvious that the interlocked ends G-Gr may be easily`disengaged to permit the body portions to be entirely separated if found desirable. The strip C is preferably made the same in length as that of the body portions and can be blanked at the same time and from the same stock as that of the body portions A and B, thus saving time in making the wrapper.
Having thus'described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Vl. A wrapper' made of flexible material comprising two longitudinally extending portions having means for holding thern together in relatively adjustable relation,
i and a strip portion held to one of said body portions, in adjustable relation thereto, the
ends of which are adapted to overlieV theA ends of a packageheld within the wrapper. 2. A lwrapper made of flexiblematerial comprising two longitudinally extending vor'ins av' Y i o ioftim to h 1n means 1cor hold ng Lle together in relatively adjustable relation, and a'strip portion held to one of said body portions, inupivotable relation thereto, the
ends of which are adapted to overlie the ends of a package held within the wrapper.
3. A wrapper made Vof liexible material,
' comprising two longitudinally extending Y the other of which is provided with interlocking end portions which extend through said slots and are adapted to slide therein; and a strip portion held to one of said body portions, in adjustable relation thereto, the ends of which are adapted to overlie the ends of a package held within the wrapperj' Signed at New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New/York this 8th day of July, A. D. 1919.
