G. HUNT.
Barrel Covers.
No. 137,683, PatehtedApriI8,1873.

n'rn'r OFFICE,
GEORGE HUNT, OF WAWAYANDA, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,683, dated April 8, 1873 application filed March 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNT, of Wawayanda, in the county of Sussex and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel- Govers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the upper side of my device. Fig. 2 is a like view of the lower side of the same, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection upon line 00 m of Figs. 1 and 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to increase the strength, durability, and convenience of barrel-covers, without correspondingly increasing their cost; to which end said invention consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a barrel-cover, constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as is hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a circular disk of wood, constructed usually from two or more pieces jointed at their edges and confined in relative longitudinal and vertical positions by means of a rim, B, of thin bent wood, which incloses the edge of said disk and extends downward below the lower surface of the same, and embraces the outer side of the barrel, vto which said disk or cover is applied. Extending across the inner side of the cover A, at its center and in a line at a right angle to the grain of the wood, is a cleat, O, which, at or near its ends, is firmly attached to said cover by screws 0 or other suitable means. At the center, and upon the upper side, of the cover A is placed a knob or handle, D, which is secured in position by means of a screw, rivet, or bolt, (7, that passes downward through its center, through said cover, and into and through the cleat O, the effect of such arrangement being to effectually bind said parts to gether and to furnish a strong hold for said screw.
As constructed, it will be seen that the cleat O and knob D perform each a double office, the first by strengthening the cover and pre Venting it from splitting and warping, and also by furnishing a firm hold for the knob screw or rivet, while said knob and its screw not only afford a convenient handle for raising the cover, but also more firmly unite the latter and said cleat than would be possible otherwise.
The cleat or strengthening piece also does away with all necessity for gluing the edges of the pieces of which the cover is made, or for using dowels to prevent the pieces from springing, so as, thereby, to cause unevenness in the surfaceof the same.
I am aware that strengthening-cleats as applied to barrel-covers are old, and that handles having various forms have before been employed upon such covers, and therefore do not claim the same broadly.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is-- As a new article of manufacture, the cover A provided with the rim B, the central cleat O secured to its lower side, and the knob D placed upon the upper side and center of said cover and connected with said cleat by means of a screw or rivet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of March, 1873.
