WILLIAM N. JAY, CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LAWN -SWING.
Application filed August 23, 1920. Serial No. 465,286.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM N. JAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lawn-Swing, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention has reference to lawn swings or the like especially designed for childrens use, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a novel form of swing which will revolve around a supporting post, and one which may be readily and easily set up for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be operated by a person occupying a seat of the swing, there being means to receive the feet of the operator to permit the swing to revolve under its momentum.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a swing of the portable type which may be readily dismantled for storing.
TVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a swing constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a plan View of the same.
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 illustrates a fragmental detail view partly in section, of the supporting bearing.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the supporting post of the swing, which in operation is driven into the ground surface, so than an appreciable length of the post will extend above the ground surface to support the swing proper, and this supporting post is preferably circular in cross sectlon and provided with a hollow end indicated at 6.
The movable portion of the swing includes a horizontal arm 7, vertical arms 8 having their upper extremities connected to ter 11.
The inner extremity of the horizontal arm 7 supports a pivot pin 12 which includes spaced side arms 13 the distance between the arms being equal to the width of the horizontal arm 7 to permit the arms 13 to embrace a portion of the arm 7, there being provided securing bolts let for securing the pivot pin to the arm 7.
Disposed in the upper hollow end of the post 5, is a circular bearing member 15 which is provided with a circumferential flange 16, adapted to contact with the upper edge of the post 5 to support the bearing member 15 in proper relation with the post 5 and prevent the same from being forced into the hollow portion 6 of the post 5. As shown, the lower extremity of the pivot pin 12 is tapered as at 17 so that the pin may be readily positioned within the bearing, the shoulders 18 however which are formed adjacent to the upper end of the pin 12, being designed to contact with the upper edge of the bearing member 15 to support the weight of the horizontal arm 7.
Positioned between the vertical bars 8, at the lower extremities thereof, is a bearing member 19 which has a forward yoke portion 20 designed to embrace a portion of the post 5 to insure against lateral displacement of the movable portion of the swing, at the base of the supporting post 5.
Carried at the outer or free end of the horizontal arm 7, are the depending arms 21, the upper extremities of which are secured to the arms 7 on opposite sides thereof, by means of the bolts 22, the lower ends being held in spaced relation as by means of the horizontal bar 23 which is secured between the arms 21 as by means of the bolts 24:.
Blocks indicated at 25 are supported in spaced relation with each other between the arms 21, the space between the blocks being equal to the thickness of the forward portion 26 of the seat 27. Thus it will be seen that by positioning the forward portion 26 of the seat. between predetermined blocks, theseat may be adjusted With relation to the ground surface, thus adapting the swing for use by persons of various sizes.
In the operation of the device, a person occupies the seat 27, whereupon by pushing on the ground surface, the arms 7 together with the arms 21, and seat portion 27 are caused to revolve around the supporting post 5. It is obvious that after the swing has attained a predetermined speed, the operator may coast by positioning his feet on the horizontal bar 23.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A swing comprising a vertical supporting post, a horizontally disposed arm movable around the supporting post, a pair of surface in which the swing operates, blocks disposed in spaced relation with each other, between the latter arms, and a'seat portion having an extension adapted to be positioned between the blocks for adjustably connecting the seat portion and arms.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my slgnature in the presence of two witnesses.
, WILLIAM N. JAY.
