T 0 all w kom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS O. N. BoYUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wing, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Boxes and other Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to closures for boxes and other receptacles, and more particularly to a means for locking the closure, the object of the invention being to provlde a closure and certain parts associated and cooperating therewith whereby the closure may be locked without the employment of a lock. The parts are so constructed and arranged that they must be operated in a proper predetermined sequence, and as some of the parts are more or less hidden or obscure, their operation by an uninitiated person is rendered extremely difiicult.

Referring specifically to the drawings 10 denotes a box of rectangular or other suitable contour provided with a top closure in the form of a flat lid 11, and having at the bottom feet 12. One of these feet is carried by a stem 13 having a slidable connection with the box for a purpose to be presently described.

A portion of the lid 11 is formed with a top recess 14 in which seats, flush with the remainder of the lid, a flat plate 15 extending from one end of the lid about half way across to the other end. The inner end of the recess 1a extends obliquely across the lid, and the corresponding end of the plate 15 is cut on a bias to fit against said end of the recess. The inner edge of the recess is undercut, and the corresponding edge of the plate is beveled to fit the same.

The lid 11 is pivotally connected to one of the end walls 16 of the box 10 by a screw 17 or other suitable means inserted into said end wall and passing through a longitudinal slot 18 in the lid, and also through an aperture in the plate 15, the latter being thus pivotally connected to the lid so that it may be swung out of the recess 14:. The slot 18 allows the lid 11 to be slid in the direction of its length to the extent of the length of the slot, the latter being so located that when the lid closes the box, it may be slid in the direction of the end of the box carrying the pivot 17 The lid 11 carries a handle in the shape of a cleat 19 having a slidable connection with the lid and seating across the joint between the same and the plate 15. The cleat has a bottom rib 2O seating slidably in a longitudinal slot 21 in the lid, and on the bottom of this rib is a retaining plate 22 seating in a recess 23 in the under side of the lid. The slot 21 is continued for a short distance into the recessed portion 14 of the lid, and hence the rib 20 can be slid thereinto for the purpose of locking the plate 15 to the lid, said plate having an edge notch 24 at its inner end to receive the rib 20. The cleat 19 therefore serves as a latch for locking the plate 15 to the lid 11.

In the top of the lid 11 is a transverse undercut recess 25 in which seats a slide 26 which is engageable at its inner end with that end of the rib 20 opposite the end which engages the notch 24. Thus, when the handle 19 is slid to lock the plate 15, and the slide 26 is advanced to engage the rib, the handle is held against being slid in a direction to release the plate 15.v A strip 27 is set flush in the top of the lid in line with the slide, but this strip is not movable and is without function.

On the end wall 28 of the box opposite the end 16 carrying the pivot 17 is a dovetailed lug 29 which seats in a corresponding recess 30 in the bottom of the lid 11 when the latter is closed, whereby the lid is prevented from being swung about its pivot 17 until it is slid back far enough to clear 4 the lug.

The stem 13 extends upward through the end wall 28 of the box, and is of a length to project from the top edge thereof into a recess 31 at one side of the recess 30, the stem therefore serving as a latch to prevent the lid 11 from being slid back to clear the lug 29.

\Vhen the lid 11 is locked in closed position the parts are in the following position. The plate 15 is locked in the recess 14 by the rib 20, and the latter is locked by the slide 26; the lug 29 seats in the recess 30, and the stem 13 is extending into the recess 31. To unlock the lid, the slide 26 must first be withdrawn to unlock the handle 19, which latter is then slid to one side until the rib 20 leaves the-notch 24. The plate 15 is now swung sidewise a sufficient distance out of the recess 14 to enable the lid to be slid back to clear the lug 29, but before this can be done, the stem 13 must be retracted to clear the recess 31, and

when this is done, the lid can he slid to clear the lug, after which it is free to be swung open about its pivot 17. A reversal of this operation closes and locks the lid.

The combination with a box; of a lid having a sliding and pivotal connection with the box, said lid having a top recess, a plate seating in the recess, said plate and the lid having abutting parts to prevent sliding movement of the lid, and the plate being movable to release the lid, a slidable handle on the lid extending across to abutting parts and having a latch part engageable w1th the plate for locking the same, a means engageable with the handle for locking the same against sliding movement to release the plate, feet on the bottom of the box, one of the feet having a stem seating slidably and concealed in the wall of the box, and projecting from the top edge thereof, the under side of the lid having a keeper recess for the projecting end of the stem whereby the lid is held against sliding movement, and coacting means on the box and the lid for preventing pivotal movement thereof, said last mentioned means releasing the lid when the same is slid.
