SLIDING-SIDE CRIB.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM B. Fosrnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Side Cribs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference numerals marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My present invention relates to sliding side cribs and more particularly to the means whereby the hollow horizontal members of the sliding side are mounted upon the vertical guide rods adjacent to the corner posts of the crib.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a sliding side crib construction of improved and novel form and one that is readily made, durable and noiseless in operation and well adapted to attain the other ends required in devices of this character.

A further object is to provide a joint whereby the hollow horizontal member of the sliding side of the crib may be slidingly mounted upon the guide rods by means of a long joint through the hollow member, said joint being of such character as to be readily operated, noiseless in use and so constructed that the guide rod will not engage ihe edge of the perforated hollow side mem- A further purpose is to provide a sliding joint in the hollow member of the crib side that will allow the guide rod to extend through said hollow member, but that will close the cavity of the hollow member about said joint thus preventing the entrance of paint or other finishing material into the cavity of the hollow member during the making of the article and also preventing the entrance of vermin into the cavity of the hollow member when the crib is in use.

A further purpose is to form a crib construction wherein the parts of the sliding side joint are combined with the closure for the end of the hollow member in such manneras to hold said closure in place without the use of additional parts or operations.

Further purposes and advantages of my invention will appear from the specification and claim herein.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sliding side crib construction embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the sliding side joint as shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through a hollow crib side member wherein the parts of the sliding side joint are also utilized to retain in position the end closure for said hollow member.

Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 4.

Fig. 6 is a perspective View of an end closure of the form used in the construction shown in Figs. 4c and 5.

Referring to the drawings in a more particular description it will be seen that the sliding side joint herein shown is used to slidingly mount the top and bottom horizontal members 7 of the sliding side of a crib upon the guide rods 8 which are supported from and are adjacent to the corner posts 9 of the crib. The sliding side of the crib-usually consists of a top and a bottom horizontal member 7 and a suitable number of connecting vertical rods or tubes 10. In, Fig. 1 I have shown the joint situated at the left hand end of the lower horizontal member of the sliding side.

The hollow horizontal. crib side member 7 is provided with an aperture 11 in its upper side or surface and a similar aperture 12 in its lower side or surface, said apertures being opposite each other and in alinement with the guide rod 8 which is to extend through said apertures. The apertures are considerably larger than the rod 8 to be used with any particular construction.

Through the apertured hollow member 7 is placed a tubular bushing 13 with its ends preferably extending through said apertures 11 and 12 and with the extremities of said bushing turned outwardly and flattened against the outer surface of the hollow member 7. Where as in the drawings the guide rod 8 is circular in cross section the bushing 13 will be circular in cross section, but of larger internal diameter than the external diameter of the guide rod.

It will now be seen that I have provided an opening or eye through the hollow side member 7 whereby the side is slidingly mounted upon the guide rod and that the jointor bearing between the side member 7 and the guide rod consists entirely of the bushing 13. In other words a long sliding bearing is provided which tends to ease and quietness of operation and particularly prevents contact of the guide rod 8 against the edges of the hollow side member 7 which would produce a grating or rasping and vibrating noise when the side of the crib is operated. Furthermore it will be seen that the opening made through the hollow side member 7 for the guide rod is so constructed as to have the main cavity 1 1 of the hollow member 7 entirely closed. This is an ad vantage in constructing the sides of the cribs in that the paint, enamel or other finishing .material applied to the crib side will not enter the cavity of the hollow members 7, it being assumed of course that at that stage of manufacture a suitable end closure 15 of common construction has been securedto the ends of said side member 7. The cavity 14 being closed also prevents vermin having access to said cavity.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the construction already described is modified by utilizing the bushing 13 to hold in place an end closure 16. In this construction the end closure 16 has ears 17 extending back inside the hollow member 7 pastthe apertures 11 and 12. In line with said apertures the ears 17 are provided with holes 18. The end closure 16 is placed in position before the bushing 13 so that when the bushing 13 is placed in position it extends through the holes 18 in the end closure and also through the apertures 11 and 12 of the hollow crib side member.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a sliding-side crib, the combination of a vertical guide rod, a hollow horizontal crib-side member having near its end oppositely disposed apertures through which the guide rod extends, an end closure for the hollow member having ears extending inward past said apertures with holes in said ears in line with said apertures and a bushing extending through said apertures and said holes whereby the end closure is held in place and the cavity of the hollow'memher is closed and a long guide-way is provided for the guide rod, said bushing entirely separating the guide rod from the 1101- low member and the ears of the end closure.
