M. R. BISHOP. SAFETY DEVICE FOR BATHTUBS. APPLICATION FILED OCT-21, 1919.

u OJ 7;

SAFETY DEVICE FOR BATHTUBS;
' To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, M'iinvm'Rmenwar BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Bathtubs, of which the following is a specification.
Many-serious accidents have been occasioned by persons, particularly the old and the sick, slipping incidental to getting-into and out of the porcelain bath-tubs not; in
vo e.
he object of my present sole invention is the provision of a bath-tub equipped to avert such accidents.
To'th'e attainment of the foregoing, the
invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. C
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a perspective illustrative of a bath-tub equipped in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sec tion showing one of the .clamps embodied in the specific construction shown.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings;
My invention, broadl stated involves equipping a bath-tub 1 wlth a support overhanging the tub and affording a hand-hold fora person getting into and out of the tub so as to practically do away with the likelihood of the person slipping.
In the specific construction illustrated, the support alluded to comprises tubular standards 2, apertured at 3 for adjustment purposes; rods 4 telescopically arranged in standards and having apertures for registration with apertures 3; anchored pins 5 10 adapted to be set against the walls with designed to occupy the said apertures and maintain the rods 4 at various heights, a longitudinal rod 6 supported by the rods 4, and straps 7 adjustable on the rod 6 in the direction of the length thereof, and provided with hand loops 8. At their lower ends the standards 2 are provided witlf clamp bodies 9 to straddle the end walls of the-tub, and in said bodies 9 are threaded clamping screws a' view to fixedly attaching the standards 2 Specification of Letters Patent.
' not confine myself to the same. v
1 It will be apparent from the foregoing 6 5 Patented Apr, 26, 1921.
Application filed 0ctober'21, 1919. Serial No. 332,159
thereto and thereon. The rods ,4 at their upper ends have eyes 11 to receive the aper-- tured end portions of the rod 6, together with pins 12 for adjustably fixing the rod 6 to the rods 4;, according to the length that the support is to have for use on a particular bath-tub. While highly desirable for practical purposes, the features just vdescribed are not of the essence of my invention, and it is'therefore to be understood that I do that precedent torgetting into and out of the bath-tub, a person may conveniently grasp the hand loops 8, with the result that -the possibility of an accident due to the person slipping incidental to stepping into and out of the tub, is practically precluded.
I would further have it understood in conclusion that my invention is'not restricted to the equipment characterized as stated, in
the form of an attachment, inasmuch as without involving departure from the scope of my invention, the support maybe carried by and form a permanent part or adjunct of the bath-tub. r
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: I KL 1 The combination ofa bath-tub and an overhead support, overhanging the tuba'nd' afl'ording a hand-hold for a person in standing posture getting into and-out of the tub or standing in the tub.
*2. The comblnation of a bathtub, and an overhead support overhanging the tub and affording a hand-hold fora person in standing posture getting into and out of the tub or standing in the tub; the said support including a horizontal overhead rod and a hanger strap loose on and pendent from said rod. 1
3. The combination of a bath-tub, standards equipped with means afiixing the same to opposite end walls of the tub, a longitudinal-centraloverhead rod carried. and A extending between said standards an ing above the longitudinal center of thetub nd a hanger strap loose on and pendent from said rod.
Intestimony whereofl aflix my signature- I MINNIE mnenwar BISHoP.
