Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 2, i914. Serial No. 878,472.
To all whom it may mam f Be it known that I; CHARLES W. WADS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in theieounty, (if-Kings,
' there is but little chance to-avoidja fall, as
companying drawing.
Similar letters rcier to similar parts- State of New York, have inventedia new and useful Hand-Rail for -Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification. I,
Accidents resulting. in serious injuries. to
'bathers by slipping and falling in bath tubs,
are very frequent since the porcelain lined and other smooth surfaced tubs have come into such general uses; In case"ones l1ps there is no available support except vto grasp the roll or rim oi the tub, which .is usually smooth surfaced and very difiicult'to hold.
The object of myinvention is to provide a safety hand rail'that can be securely attached to thetulo in aconvenient position to.
be grasped for steadying and supporting a person when getting into or when rising andgetting out 0 the tub. My device is simple of. construction, inexpensive, durable, easily attached to removed from the tub.
The mechanism is illustrated in the acthroughout the several views.
vertical part, upright divided-in lower half and spread; (c) footing and angle, footings turned en the parts of (b) as divided, to rest on and conform to ;he roll of the tub,-
cxtendin'g from the beg nning of the flare on the inner side of the roll outward over the roll, and turned up under the outer edge, the footings to be turned at an angle to secure the upright .(ib) in-t. verticai pos tion. The vertical Rart, (b) and footings (6) may wood, metal or other substance,
be single, but prefer to shown in drawings.
Fig. 3. Crossbar with nut fitting,
apply divided, as
used alone or in combination; (6) nut fitting to correspond with thread on (d) or any othertype of fitting for securing rigid attachment of (11) andfa). -'f
1 device is designed'for use on any size or make of bath tub havinga roll with 'free edge finish,' a,nd the length of crossbar, the
height of standards and the shape of their ((2) bar,
Patented July so, 1915.
footings will be varied to fit the tub on -whie'h used- The parts should be so proportioned that when mounted on the tub the above the tub'to beconveniently reached by a person seated in the tub, and the whole to be of strength and rigidity 'sufi'icient to 70.
sustain ana-pproxiinatc weight of I 300 pounds or stand a pull of likenmount.
hand rail will be across and at a height The attachment. to the-bath. tub is made i by resting thelfo'otsof thcstandards on v the roll on the opposltesides of the tub, the
footings, fitting over and engaging under the free edge ofthe roll, secur ng the standards' in an upright position- The crossbar.
is made sho'i' ter than the free space between the heads oi; the -standards, to which its ends are attached, by drawing inthe heads ofthe' standards on a smart tension, this leverage resulting inv a rigid grip of the footingson the roll. The under surface of the footings may b lined with rubber or other substance for the protection of the roll of'the tub. s
. This device may be attached to the mil 0n the sides of the tub at any-place When attached hear the foot it is in a position to be conveniently" graspedby the bather and does not interfere w th" the free use of'the tub,
I claim: v
I 1. The combination, with a bath tub, of'a pair of metal standards located on the roll on the opposite sides of the tub, having; their footings fitted to the roll and engaged" under its free edge, their bodies extended vertically' above the roll; a bar having its ends seourely'attached by proper fittings to. the
heads of the standards, the bar shorter than the free space between the heads of the standards, with which the connection is effected by drawing in the heads bn a smart tensi0n, a11 substantially ixs set forth.
2. The combination, with a bath tub, of a crossbar hau ing its ends securely attached by proper fiqtings, to a pair of metal standards having their footings resting on, fitted to andturned up under the outer edge of w the roll on the opposite sides of the tub ah substantially as set forth.
