ACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- WOVEN POCKETED CARRIER.
Application filed December 11, 1919, Serial No. 344,182.
To ((ZZ 10. mm it may concern,
Be it known that I, FRANK R. BATCH- niinnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the rounty of Worcester State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Woven Pocketed Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
T he invention is an improvement in pocketed carriers made of woven material, of the class embracing cartridge carriers.
It consists in a pocketed carrier comprising a backing or belt-portion with a pocket thereon having its top at a distance below the upper edge or margin of said backing or belt-portion, leaving a strip of the latter exposed above the top of the pocket, with a housing-slit formed with its mouth-opening in the front face of the portion of packing or belt-portion which is exposed above the top of the pocket, and a cover-flap for the pocket having its attaching end entered into the said housing-slit above and externally of the pocket.
The drawing illustrates the invention,-
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing some of the pockets of a cartridge carrier F 1g. 2 is a view.
embodying the invention in vertical section in the plane indicated by line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view, with the cover-flap omitted.
Referring to the drawings,
1 have shown the invention embodied in ronn'ection with a pistol-cartridge pocket. at one end of a pocketed carrier such as usually forms one part of a cartridge-belt; it may be embodied in a carrier having a plurality of pockets with their tops below the upper edge of a backing or belt-portion.
The pocket 1 in connection with which the invention is embodied may be, and usually will be, woven integrally with the backing or belt-portion 2, which mode of construction is regarded as best in practice, or may be made separately in approved manner (either by weaving it in pocket shape or by stitchin cloth into shape) and attached to the said backing or belt-portion.
The backing or belt-portion 2 is woven in the two plies 2 2, Figs. 2 and 3, tied together in the weaving by binder warpthreads 2", 2.
As shown in the drawings, the top and open mouth of the pocket 1 is quite a distance below the upper margin or edge of the backing or belt-portion 2, so that there is an exposed strip 2 of the said backing or belt-portion stretching from the top of the pocket to the said upper margin or edge.
In accordance with the invention, I provide a housing-slit 3 having its mouth-opening 3 located at the face of the backing or belt-portion 2, above the top or open mouth 'of the pocket 1, said housing-slit 3 extending from the said mouth-opening down between the plies of the backing or belt-portion 2 at the rear of the pocket 1 itself. The said housing-slit is produced by leaving the two plies 2 2, unconnected together inthe weaving across the width of the pocket, which may be efiected by incorporating them in one of such plies, without crossing over from one ply to the other. At 5 is a line of fastenings, preferably stitches, above the top or open mouth of the pocket 1, by which the inserted portion of the cover-flap is secured in place between the front and back plies of the backing or belt-portion, and the said mouth is closed.
My invention enables a housing-slit to be utilized in connection with a pocket having the top or open mouth thereof located below the upper margin or edge of the backing or belt-portion, without the drawback of large openings presenting themselves above the pocket, at opposite sides thereof, when the cover-flap is closed down around the pocket. Such openings would be presented below the cover-flap if the attaching end of the cover-flap were entered into a housing-slit having its moiith opening at the extreme upper margin or edge of the backing or belt-portion, which has been the customary location of housing-slits in practice heretofore. It further enables the cover-flap to be combined with the backing or belt-portion in a manner to secure a close and tight covering for the mouth of the pocket without it being necessary to attach the cover-flap by inserting its attaching end down inside the pocket itself, which has numerous drawbacks and disadvantages.
What I claim as the invention is,-
1. A pocketed carrier comprising a backing or belt-portion with a pocket thereon having its top at a distance below the upper edge or margin of said backing or belt-portion, said backing or belt-portion having a housing-slit formed therein and within the thickness of the backing or belt portion with its mouth-opening in the front face of the portion of backing or belt'portion which is exposed above the top of the pocket, and a cover-flap for the said pocket having its attaching end secured in the said housingslit.
2. A pocketed carrier comprising a backing or belt-portion composed of a plurality of lies, a pocket thereon having its top at a dlstance below the upper edge or margin of the backing or belt-porti0n, said backing or belt-portion having a housing-slit formed between its plies with the mouthopening thereof located in the front face of the portion of backing or belt-portion which is exposed above the top of the pocket, and a cover-flap for the said pocket having its attaching end secured in the said housing-slit.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
