- This invention relates to cans for containing liquids and that are equipped with a filling nozzle and a delivery spout, and the main object is to prevent dripping of the liquid after the pouring of the latter has ceased, a further object being to completely close the mouth of the can when the screw plug is driven tightly in the nozzle.

Application filed June 11, 1920. Serial No. 388,270.
To all w how. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY B. 'LINDSAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans forLiquids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cans for containing liquids and that are equipped with a filling nozzle and a delivery spout, and the main object is to prevent dripping of the liquid after the pouring of the latter has ceased, a further object being to completely close the mouth of the can when the screw plug is driven tightly in the nozzle.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 being a partly broken sectlonal elevation of a can equipped with my 1mprovement with the male and female members of the spout and can screwed tightly together- Fig. 2 a broken sectional elevation showing these male and female members relaxed- Fig. 3 a detail bottom view of the plug or male member, and

Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing. 4 l is an ordinary can equipped with a fil ing nozzle 2 that is in the form of a Socket with a coarse female thread therein.
3 is the spout which has secured to its rear bottom face a hollow plug 4 leading into the spout and having a coarse male thread therearound corresponding in pitch to the female thread in the socket.
This plug has an outer face 5 that is convex and has an integral closure 6 at its central portion and spaced opening 7 at its outer portion, while the socket 2 has an opening 8 in its bottom portion that is in communication with the can. When the pin is driven tightly within this socket the closure 6 will effectively seal the opening 8 and prevent leakage from the can.
l Vhen the plug is relaxed, the contents of the can may be readily poured through the spout, since they will pass through the spaced openings 7.
The upper edge of the socketmember 2 i I flared as shown at 9, and when the plug has been driven tightly within the-socket, this flared edge will be slightly spaced from the bottom surface of the spout as clearly shown at Fig. 1. 3
After pouring through the spout the drip w-ill'flow along the bottom of the spout and will be caught by'the flaring edge 9, and

will then trickle down between the male and 1 female threaded-members and back into, the
can, and if the latter be closed byoperation of the plug, this drip will merely collect in the well afforded by the flar'ed edge 9, and. as soon as the plug is again relaxed will pass into the can.
By the use'of my improvement the drip cannot soil the can or render it unsightly, and, moreover, considerable saving of the contents of the can is effected.
The rear of the spout body is extended as shown at 10 in order to protect the edge 9 at that point.
, I claim p l. An oil can having an interiorly threaded nozzle whose upper edge is flared, in combination with a spout having an exteriorly threaded plug that is screwed within said nozzle, said edge being spaced from the bottom of the spout when the plughasbeen driven/tight within said nozzle.- p

An oil can having. an interiorly' threaded nozzle with an opening through its central. bottom portion leading into the can, in combination with a spout having an exteriorly threaded hollow plug leading into said spout and formed with a convex botto'm whose central portion is closed and whose outer portion has spaced openings, whereby the driving of the plugwill seal the opening which leads from the nozzle into the can, while the relaxing of the plug will permit the can contents to. pass through the openings in they bottom of the plug and out through the spout;
3L An oil can provided withan interiorly threaded nozzle having an opening in its bottom, and a spout provided with a hollow exteriorly threaded plug leading into the spout and having an integral bottom whose central portion acts as a closure to said opening and whose peripheral portion has openings through which the contents of the can may pass when the closure is relaxed.
