This of course may be done in various ways.
For ease, economy a'nd speed in manufacture, I form my toggle head from stamped sheet metal. I take a blank such as 7, Fig. 5 and bend it at 8 to ferm the interior reverse U shaped member 9 and thenagain bend the blank at 10-10 to form the side 11--11 of the head shown in Figs. 2 and 3. At the time the blank is stamped, or subsequently, I preferably provide it with hinge seats to coperate with the hinge inember, whatever that form of hinge member may be. One form of hinge seat, and the one that I preferably use, is 1.2-12`formed by stamping out a portion of the blank.
When the blank is bent as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the end 2 will overbalance the end 3 even though Athe two ends are of the sam-e length. This is due to the fact that additional or surplus metal is formed into the head of the toggle on the end 2 and-not on the end 3. This additional bend or crimp of the metal forming the U shaped member 9 also strengthens the entire toggle head while not interfering with the operator moving out the arms 13-13 toinsert, or change, the pivoting or hingejmember.
This hinge member may be the square nut shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or the diamond shaped nut 14, Fig. 3, in whichl the ends 15m15 ofL the nut are, in effect, trunnions; or the hinge member may be a true trunnion nutllG, Fig. 7, having trunnions 17-17; or
the hinge member may be a T headed bolt 18, Figs.- 10 and 11 in which the T head 19 would be made to coperate with'the seats 1.2-12, or any other suitable form of hingel member may be used. The hinge member, in F igs. 10" and 11 is put under tension by the nut 20 cooperating with the screw `thread 21.
I preferably, though not necessarily, provide one or more stops on the arms 13 so that they will engage with the bolt 22 to keep the toggle head 1` in alinement with the bolt while it is being inserted in the hole 23, Fig. 9. These stops 24 are preferably formed bending over one or both of the free ends of the arms 13-13. p
It is often desirable to use 'toggle bolts in walls orA partitions or'similar locations 25, Fig. 9, in which the free or vair space 26 is limited. It is found that it is often not feasible to use an ordinary toggle bolt, having ends of unequal length to insure that the bolt will drop into its operative position as shown for example in Fig.- 8, for the reason that the air space 2G is too narrow or limited. By my invention, in which the two ends of the toggle head are of equal length, it can be mounted in a wall where the airspace 26 is of minimum width.
\ In these walls or partitions, which are quite frequently made of hollow tile, the drill will start to drill the hole 23, Figs. 8 andi), of the correct diameter until it has penetrated a certain distance from the face 27 of the wall.` Further drilling will cause the hollow tile, or other material of which the wall is made, to break away and fall on the interior of the wall leaving an irregular funnel shaped opening 28. l The contour lof this opening will vary with the material of the wall and the resistance met.
m In Fig. 8k I have shown an old form of toggle bolt having a 'riveted nut 35 and a head 29 in which the end 30 is of greater length than the end 31, this being the common expedient in the trade to ofvelbalanceV one of the ends to insure that the toggle head will assume a. vertical position in the wall as shown in Fig. 8. It has been found in practice that a toggle head having ends of unequal length, 'as for example 30 and 31, will often assume, in time, and under severe service conditions a position like that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, particularly if the work 32, to be held is subjected to vibration. This will permit the work to get loose and rattle. If the vibrations upon the work 32 are excessive, in this form of toggle head having unequal ends, the toggle head tends to work down into parallelrelation with the bolt 33 and, in time, Vwill work out of the hole 23, permitting the Ywork 32 lto drop with consequent damage and danger.
