Description

J. E. FLAHERTY.
CHURN DASHER. APPLICATION FILED 0cT. 9, I920.
1,374,843. Patented Apr. 12; 1921.
21 esiZF ATTORNEY NORRIS PETERS. |NC-. LITHOH WASHINGTON. D- C UNITED STATES JAMES E. FLAHERTY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CHURN-DASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed October 9, 1920. Serial No. 415,720.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns E. FLAHnR'rY, a citizen of United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churn-Dashers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dairy apparatus, particularly to churns and has for its object the provision of a novel churn dasher peculiarly formed whereby to be substantially hubles s so as to possess practically no inactive surface, the dasher further including a pair of paddle blades inclined longitudinally and transversely with respect to the axis, the particular angularity insuring the maximum eificiency in the churning action of the dasher so that butter may be formed in the minimum time and with little effort.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a dasher of this character which is formed simply from three pieces ofwood mortised together whereby there will be practically no likelihood of derangement of the parts and whereby the construction will be simple and inexpensive.
' WVith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed andillustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation,
Fig. 2 is anelevation at right angles to Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan View,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of thecentral member, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the paddle blades.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the central member which is formed as a substantially rectangular plate or block having rounded lower corners 11 and diagonally cut away upper corners 12. Centrally of its upper end the member 10 is formed with a thread ed socket 13 within which is engaged the lower end of the handle 14. At opposite edges this member 10 is formed with slots 15 which are inclined downwardly and inwardly toward the center and which are also inclined laterally, as clearly shown.-
The dasher further including a pair of blades 16 which are of oblong form with rounded corners 17. These blades are engaged within the slots 15 and each is formed at one edge with a slot 18 inclined with respect to the width and also with respect to the thickness of the blade. When the blades 16 are engaged within the slots 15 of the member 10, the slots 18 of the blades will engage against the faces of the member 10 inwardly of or rather between the inner ends of the slots 15 so that the inclination of the slots 15 and 18 will all operate to hold the blades 16 in their proper angular positions.
In the operation it will be seen that the dasher is used in the same manner as any other dasher of this type. It is, however, to be noted that the principal feature is the simplicity of construction and the fewness of the parts.
l/Vhile I have shown and described "the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1., A churn dasher comprising an upstanding fiat central member having rounded lower corners and inclined upper corners, said member being adapted for connection at its upper end with a handle, said member being formed in opposite edges withslots converging downwardly toward the center. and oppositely inclined laterally with respect to the flat faces of the member, and a pair of paddle blades disposed within said slots.
2. A churn dasher comprising an upstanding fiat central member having rounded lower corners and inclined upper corners said member being adaptedfor connection at its upper end with a handle, said member being formed in opposite edges with slots converging downwardly toward the center and oppositely inclined laterally with respect to theflat faces of the member, and a pair of paddle blades disposedwithin said slots, said paddle blades having their adjacent edges formed with slots inclined with respect to the edges andi to the fiat faces and engaging against the fiat faces of said cen- V tral member between the ends of the slots in the latter.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES E. FLAHERTY.
