Be it known that I, BARRETT Honowrra, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveA invented a new and useful Hat-Lining, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to hat linings and has for an object the provision of an improved construction wherein the lining may be stitched in by machine and at the same time give the appearance of a usual handy stitched lining. i

Another object yof the invention is to provide a lining for hats wherein the central part is removably connected to the remaining part of the lining' so that it may be placed in position at any time. e'

A further object more specifically isthe provision of a hat lining in which there is provided a substantially annular portion to be stitched in place and a central portion to be clamped in place.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a hat of any'desired kind and 2 the body of the lining, which is provided with a removable central section 3. The body 2 is made from any kind of cloth with the upper edge 4 turned in as shown in Fig. 1 and then stitched in place by a line of stitching 5. which may be placed in position by a sewing machine, and consequently done at a very low price.

It will be noted that the lining body 2 extends from the brim of the hat to the crown where it is provided with an opening designed to be filled by the central section 3. At the Open part of the lining body the material is bent over for forming a tubular edge 6, in which a thread or cord 7 is placed, said thread or cord being preferably nondesired material, as

stretchable.v The central section 3 is vprovided with a stifening member 8 of any for instance paper or paste-board, said central section being cove ered with a covering member 9y of cloth.l preferably identical with the lining body 2, said covering member 9 Overlapping the edges of the stiifenin member 8 as shown in Fig. 3. As shown in iig. 2 the central member 3 is diamond shape, but it may be made round or other shape without departing from the spirit of the invention. At a plurality of points there is provided a fastening member 10, which is formed from `a blank 11. This blank is provided with side projections 12 and 13, an end projection 14 and a body 15. The body 15 is passed through the stiffening member 8 and bent over as shown in Fig. 3, while the side projections 12 and 13 are passed through the stiiiening member 8 and bent `and pressed together as shown in Fig. 4 so as to inclose part of the sti'ening member 8 and thereby lock the fastening member 10 in proper position. The end projection 14 is usually bent so as to extend at substantially right angles to the reinforcing member 8 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, until the central section has been placed in position, whereupon they are bent over so as to grip to a certain extent the tubular edge 6, (Fig. 1).

It will be observed from Fig. 3 ing 9 passes over the clamping ends or projections 12, 13 and 15 so that there will be a finished appearance to the central section co-acting with the finished appearance of the lining body 2. By this construction and arrangement different colored sections 3 could be used without departing from the spirit of the invention, though preferably the same color is provided `on this section as is used in body 2. y

In manufacturing and placing in position a lining embodying the invention the body 2 is first constructed and stitched to the hat the cover- 1 by a machine, though if desired it could benected to said body adjacent said opening,

a central section overlapping said opening,

Vand hook members extending from said central section pressing against said nonstretcliable member for locking the central section to the body.

2. A hat lining comprising a body having an opening in the crown for substantially the full top thereof, a central member for said opening formed with a stifening member and a covering member, and clamping hooks extending from said stiffening member over part of the body adjacent the opening for securing the central member to the body.

3. A hat lining comprising a body having an opening in the crown, a central section covering said opening, said central section being formed With a reinforcing sheet and a Y body.

4. A hat lining comprising a body having an opening in the crown and a reinforcing member around the opening, a central section covering said opening, said central section being formed with a stiii back, a cover of ornamental cloth and a plurality 'f bendable metallic hooks or lingers rigidly secured to said central section, and extending over the reinforcement oi said body.
