EMIL PANEK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE MACHINE & STAMPING 00., OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HINGE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 12, 1921 Application filed February 2'7, 1919. Serial No. 279,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL PANEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 4616 Pershing Ave, city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinge Constructions, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle,; so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates generally to a hinge construction and more particularly to a flush bead hinge. The drawing exemplifies the application of my invention to an automobile box accessory which 'is surrounded by a bead at or near the point where the hinge action is to take place.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and economical construction and to incidentally improve the appearance of the whole.
Adverting to the drawings:
Figure I is an elevation of the upper portion of the rear of a box with a cover hinged thereto after the manner of my invention.
Fig. II is a section on line IIII of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a section on line III-III of Fig. I.
I Fig. IV is a perspective view of the rear side of a box with the hinge and cover removed.
Fig. V is a perspective view of the hinge.
Fig. VI is a perspective view of the hinge pln.
Inasmuch as the two hinge constructions shown are of duplicate formation throughout only one need be described and accord ingly the singular number will be employed.
The rear side 1 ofa box body is provided near its upper edge portion 2 with an outwardly curved bead 3. The bead portion 3 is slotted out at 4 as best appears in Fig. IV;
A cover 5 having a lower rear'edge portion 6 is adapted to inolose the edge portion 2 as is shown in Figs. II and III. A hinge leaf 7 is spot welded at the two points 8 to the portion 6 of the cover in such a way that the bottom of the hinge leaf depends below the lowermost edge of the portion 6 of the cover. Suchbottom of the hinge leaf is curved to one side at 9 to form a cylindrical tube adapted for insertion through the slot 4 .and to be of complementary contour. It is to be understood that the side toward which the bottom 9 of the hinge leaf is rolled up is the inside of the hinge leaf so that the tubular portion 9 is mainly disposed inwardly of the outermost line of the bead the out side of the hinge leaf being however substantially flush with the line of greatest projection of the bead 8 as may be seen on inspection of either Figs. II or III. Passed through the tubular portion'9 and occupying the concavity of the bead 3 on each side of the slot 4 is a hinge pin 10 which is, of course, put in place after the portion 9 has been inserted through the slot 4. It is'preferable to spot weld the hinge pin at two points 11 to the bead 8 in order to prevent its dislodgement. g
'I claim:
A hinge construction comprising a pair 0 members one fashioned with concavo-convex beads alined along andspaced from one edge also separated from each other by a slot and the other with a hollow extremity conforming in shape to said beads, and adapted to be accommodated by said slot for securing said members in such position.
